Yeah, it looks a little odd. Usually the M4's have the shorter barrel, hence the cutout in front of the front sight post so you can attach an M203. Maybe its some weird setup just for boot camp or MCT?
Marines are deploying with it. Apparently it's what they "get now" according to the NCO I was talking to about it.

Uhh . . . it's an RFI to order 11,000 IARs. I'm honestly mystified after reading the RFI how this morphs into "they're phasing out the M4/M16." Seems to me they're just looking for a vendor for 11,000 M27s.Looks like days are numbered for the M4 Carbine and the M-16A4
