My favorite Marine Air story is from the early 80's at MCAS Yuma. My Navy reserve VF SRU had 4 or 5 planes there using the ACMR against A-4's from the VC adversary squadron at Miramar. After a day of generally getting hammered by the A-4's, we come back to Yuma & taxi up to the transient line. Looking at the end of the runway, we see a Marine F-4 on final with a full load of bombs (Marine F-4 RAG was at Yuma). While they must have had some reason not to drop, the F-4 makes a high sink rate touchdown and immediately blows both mainmounts (I literally hit the deck thinking the bombs had gone off) and then continues down the runway grinding the mainmounts down to nubs in a great trail of fire. Finally departing the runway, the F-4 goes into the desert in a great cloud of dust. Next thing we see is the 2 canopies open & the pilot & RIO get out, dust themselves off and walk away from the a/c as if it were just another day at the office. This is a no-shit, I-was-there story. My worst nightmare was that the same a/c might be sent to us after it came back out of O&R.

Wow, great story. I was talking to "Hondo" at the Palm Springs Air Museum -- he was telling me about his days with VMA(AW)-242 back when they were flying A-6s. Great guy with some great stories about the good ol' days at El Toro... I wish they hadn't shut that base down.

heh no kidding.. By the time I get there MV-22s probably eh? :p I'd be fine with that honestly (or 46s for that matter). FW is only a preference. Right now my focus is set squarely on The Big Suck though (as yours is I'm sure - A Co. right?)
