Saw this at the air show today, thought it was a little odd looking. From what I can google, it seems like Marine pilots are using them to begin transitioning to the F-35. Anyone here know anything more about it?

That one appears to be from NSAWC, where they have some Marines stationed. Typically when there are Navy/Marines together (training command, hornet RAG, etc) they'll have a couple of jets marked like that.

On a separate note, yes, the prospective F-35 pilots (VMFAT-501) have been maintaining currency in Vipers. Not sure if they are theirs or USAF (suspect USAF), but I doubt the one in the picture is one of them.

Its one of the jet out at Top Gun. Half of the vipers say Marines the other Navy. Its nothing new and has no hidden meaning in life.

Are those the fabled "F-16Ns?" I'm told they're stripped down, to get a little more thrust-to-weight to improve performance as aggressors. True?

That's what I figured they were for (some type of a dog-fight training aircraft) until I searched the net for them I saw a bunch a F-35 training articles. I guess they're multipurpose.

Its like when the jets in the training command have "Marines" painted on the side of 'em. Its a Navy command, but there are Marine IPs and Marine students going through NSAWC. These jets have nothing to do with JSF training and everything to do with adversary work at NFL.

Gotcha, so I guess they have another cache of f-16s for the JSF. Consider me enlightened, thanks!

The F-35 wing is a joint org at Eglin AFB in Florida. They have no F-35s yet, but no shortage of F-16s, and the pilots have to fly something to stay proficient. However, they're Air Force planes flown by Marines, not 'Marine F-16s'. Big difference.

Hey Joe would likely know best but I can't picture you could actually do much with an early F-16 to make it much lighter. They were heater and gun only air-to-air and darn light. They did have a pretty short life span since they were pretty much doing ACM for a living and ended up running through their wing life and were retired. IIRC the newest ones the Navy has had been in storage for quite a while as they had been built for Pakistan and were subject to the 90's embargo before they became our "ally" on the latest dust up.

You remember correctly, here is the full story.
