I am currently applying to OCC 187 (October 04) as an NFO Contract. I've been lurking on this site for quite a while, and I just want to see if there are any NFOs out there who can answer some questions. First off, what kind of general timeline can I expect as an NFO (Training, FRS, 1st duty station, etc.)? How long does the training last? Right now, I am hoping to get on Hornets rather than Prowlers, but that could change, and is there a choice? Also, (kind of off the subject), how would it work if my wife were to want to find a job in the same place as me, ie- Does the Corps help out with placement of spuses etc. (she is getting a PhD. in counseling psychology so it's kind of a specialized field.) I know this is a lot all at once, but I am about to pull the trigger on the biggest decision of my life and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Gig 'Em.

I wrote a big writeup of the NFO training at Pensacola. Its over on the NFO forum. Take a look at that, it should answer some questions on training. After you get winged, you'll go to Whidbey Island, WA for the Prowler RAG or Lemore, CA for the Hornet RAG. After about a year in Whidbey, or 9 months in Lemore, you'll go to your first squadron.
I've seen one thing here at Whidbey about helping to find jobs for spouses, but i don't think it helps too much. I know a lot of guys here who's wives are having a lot of trouble finding work. It was just seem to me that your wife is going to have a problem with just a specialized field. You'll be moving to Quantico for 6 months, then Pensacola for 1.5 years, then the Rag for a year and then to wherever your squadron is. Its hard to settle down in a job.
Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Correction:

The RAG for Marine NFOs is not in Lemore--that's for Marine pilots. NFO RAG is in MCAS Mirimar, San Diego.
