Marine surfers?

Any Marine surfers out there? I hope to be stationed at either Miramar or Pendleton one day because you can't beat San Diego.
If there are no surfers out there, anyone wakeboard or do motocross?

If I am not working, I am surfing. If there is waves of course. I live in Corpus. But I travel to Mexico a couple of times of year to surf. Shoot, I am taking my board to TBS with me just in case I have time to hit up Outerbanks.

You probably won't have the time. Sure, you'll have weekends off, but you'll most likely want to use them to sleep off the week.

I'm going to OCS in October and I was thinking of bringing my board to TBS and maybe hittin up VA beach or the outerbanks too. I just got back from Folly Beach, SC this past weekend. I got lucky, because it was pretty nice on Monday. There were consistent 4 footers with nice long breaks so you can go back and forth or ride em out for a while. Can't wait to go somewhere where the waves are huge like on the left coast.

what is this 'surfing' which you speak of?

In regards to bringing a board to TBS, do it, if nothing else it gives you an excuse to get out of Quantico and avoid joining the collective voice of unimaginative chumps who dare to venture out as far as the Woodbridge Mall and complain how much TBS sucks. Which it does, if you just stay in the area. Otherwise, your weekends are almost always free, there's pretty much zero studying you have to do (compared to flight school), and you're getting a fat paycheck and have zero expenses except for that LTmobile's monthly payment. What better time to go on a road trip and go surf?

A note of caution: many marines, most of whom have never surfed, may look upon you with mild disgust and think you some prior pot-smoking, long haired hippie 'surfer dude' if you walk around the Q and talk about that perfect glassy day with chest-high swells. And while most of us know that swimming for your life in choppy seas for hours is a terrific workout, saying you PT'd all weekend gets you that marine respect, while saying you were surfing all weekend will get you stares. Most of your non-surfing peers will think you are some hedonistic slacker.

On the other hand, you'll be surprised how many surfers there are in the Marine corps that respect the sport and the pursuit of that awesome session.

As for Thatgnarlyguy, I will venture to say that Kaneohe Bay, HI tops San Diego for surfing ANY DAY. They're giving out those CH-53D slots like they're candy these days...

I have gathered from the folks that I have talked to about having time to surf at TBS is that it depends on how moto you are to get out and do it. Because the most common response I get is that "all you will want to do is drink and party or relax on the weekends". I have never gotten a solid response. i.e. A physical reason or some rule against going somewhere.
Nice encouraging words teufelsurfer. Where there is a will there is a way.

I have only been to the north shore of Oahu when I was a grommit... How is the localism at breaks around that base in Kaneohe Bay?
I completely agree with you as far as how it goes saying you have been surfing and the impression that gives to everyone. I just got done surfing 2 foot overhead groundswell from Tropical Depression Ophelia and I know I have never PT'd that hard.
Good to hear that there are some true surfer in the corps.

Personally, i know a lot of fellow surfers in the Marine Corps. I admit though they are few and far between. Being stationed out here in Jacksonville, NC ia a little rough. What they call waves out here are what we called trash back home ( I grew up in Guam, Hawaii and SoCal), but every once in a while a good storm kicks up some decent surf and makes it fun.
As for localism around Kane'ohe, I never really saw too much of a problem when I was out there. One of the best breaks, at least in my opinion, is right there on base behind the flightline. During the winter pyramid rock can be really fun with a decent North swelll.
TNG, Ophelia is kicking up some decent surf up here, but the wind is making it totally unworkable. Hopefully once it passes us, it'll smooth out.

Liable to get caught on a trip wire...
I won't say his name, but we have a guy down here in Pensacola that was in my TBS Company that was a semi-pro/professional/somethinglikethat surfer in Hawaii prior to the military, how awesome is that.

There is no 'rule' against going out somewhere, tho i think there is a 300 mile radius restriction on weekends, otherwise you have to request to be 'out of bounds' which is really just a heads up that you are going somewhere farther than usual. Other than that you've got a good 2 1/2 days to go wherever with no committments unless you have some overbearing platoon staff that wants you to muster at 5 PM on a sunday so you can have a group discussion on how to properly write a fitness report.

It doesn't take much 'will' to do something you love doing, just a little imagination and a willingness to break free from the herd mentality.

I joined this website so I could answer this specific post.
I was in the Corp from 93-97 (now OCC 190), and I surfed several places throughout the world because of the bases that I was at. I have been surfing since I was 10 and I found that there were some very good surfers in the Corp. One guy was phenomenal, he was very lightfooted and compared to the best that I have ever seen. Okinawa has to be my favorite location though. If you get in with the locals and the small American crew there, they will show you some prime spots. I surfed 8' North Rock while a Typhoon was passing, and it was one of the best days that I have ever surfed. Cape Zampa at 6' is epic also. To answer your question, there are some very good surfers in the Marines, they just play it low key. This is especially true when it's black flag, and no one is supposed to be in the water when it's too rough.
Here's a site that a friend of mine made. There are some pics of Jarheads throwing down.

Good luck
