I was watching an episode of "American Shooter" tonite, and I got to wondering how the Marines teach one to shoot a weapon.

This particular episode was about handgun shooting. They were talking about keeping the "triangle" (the shape that your hands, shoulders, and chest should make) consistent throughout the shot. I started wondering how the Marines teach one to shoot the Pistol.

My dad shot on the Marine Rifle Team back in his day, so he knows a little about shooting. My whole life I've been taught to "point" (that is both eyes open) a shotgun, and "aim" (non-dominant eye shut) a rifle. But what about a pistol? I haven't shot a pistol that much in my day, so this is all new to me.

I know that we'll learn soon enough the 'Marine' way of shooting, but I just thought I'd ask a few of you guys that already know. Shed some light on anything you wish about shotgun, rifle, & handgun shooting technique. 'Preciate it.

Snap in, snap in, snap in, snap in, and more of you guessed it....snapping in. They teach you two different types of shooting stances; the iccossolies (I know it's not spelled right) or the weaver stance. Basiclly feet shoulder width (weak foot forward) or feet side by side shoulder width. Hands gripping the pistol weak hand on knuckles of the strong hand, elbows straight but not locked, and whatever works for you two eyes open or one shut. Squeeze the trigger very smoothly so you don't know when it is going to break. Oh yeah did I mention snapping in. You'll do a lot of that at TBS, A LOT. Personally I think that's a great way to practice your aim. I use one eye shut when I shoot from 25 yards out or when I shoot slowly and accurate. When I shoot quick I keep both eyes open and don't use the sights; I just shoot. For some reason I shoot better quickly when I just shoot and don't use the sights(guess it was all those .22's as a kid). Oh yeah did I mention you'll snap in a lot, if not you'll figure it out soon enough. lol

Good sight alignment... Good sight picture. You want to foucus on the front sight tip... NOT THE TARGET. Fuzzy rear sights and a fuzzy target... but a CLEAR SHARP front sight. If you concentrate on the front sight, your eye will center the rest instinctively. And last but not least... a good, slow, steady squeeze.
