can someone tell me how to get a USMC email account. Now that im out of college and not using that email address, i'd like something a little more professional than hotmail. THanks

Hate to say it, but you're going to have to wait a bit. Tried to get setup with NMCI at primary, and they said STUDs aren't elligible for accounts. Got the same response here at the HTs, too. Generally speaking, though, you get an email account when you check into a new unit, and when you leave, the account goes **poof**. At least, that's the way it used to work back in the day. Who knows now with NMCI?

My advice after having moved around more times I can count. Get an email address with someone (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail,...whatever) and keep it. Use that email for all your personal correspondance. When you need to have a military account, you'll get one. As a student, I can't see a reason why you'd need one. At any rate, you're going to be moving around quite a bit over the next several years and it really helps to stay in touch with folks by keeping the same email. There is nothing unprofessional with having an email from Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail or the like. However, stay away from the types of usernames that you might see here on AW. Something with your real name in it works pretty good.

when i was leaving the HTs they were starting to give out NMCI accounts or starting to activate them so you may be in luck soon enough. i didnt get mine until the RAG and its just a pain to get em. Still i can only use it at the base...and all the junk mail i get is from NMCI

NMCI email account will stay with you where ever you go. Like stated above, NMCI seats are hard to come by as a student. Once you show up to your squadron, you'll get one. Until such time, GMAIL, HotMail, YahooMail, etc, are the only way to go.

BTW, GMAIL is by invitation only. If ANYONE needs an Account, I have like 50 Invites, so just drop me a PM with your Name and your email address and I'll do the invites....

We all have NMCI accounts here in TW-1. That being said, you don't want to use a usmc.mil address for personal business. Get yourself another personal email address.

War were declared.
In addition, NMCIs policies are incredibly restrictive. You will find that e-mail from external domains will often be rejected as SPAM. You wil be unable to even click on your system time window, and you will be unable to ping to check your connectivity during the many times a day NMCI gives you a reason to check your connectivity.

In addition, You are unable to check your NMCI mail from anywhere but work, and you are unable to check your NMCI while deployed, because it is not possible to log onto a domain controller from outside of CONUS, and you will be given a NEW e-mail address on a mawdm.usmc.mil domain or if you are in Iraq an acemnf-wiraq.usmc.mil account.
As said above, get hotmail and yahoo, and stick with hotmail and yahoo.

Not anymore... it was closed, then they opened it for a bit, now its closed again. But anyone who's been there for a little bit has at least 50 invites to hand out.

gmail FAQ...

2. How do I sign up? When can I get a Gmail account?

We're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. We don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available, as that depends in part on the results of the test.

Actually, as long as you have a cell phone, you don't need an invite:

I should also throw in a plug for FastMail. They have a free option, but for a very small fee, you can have a permanent email with tremendous features. Another great part is that it is not blocked on govt computers (like Hotmail, etc.). I've used it for several years and swear by it.

For my fellow computer geeks, it's a full featured IMAP account (which is ideal for those of us that move around a lot and aren't tied to a single computer). I can access the same email in Outlook, via the web, on my cellphone, etc. with all changes showing up instantly, no matter where I access it.
