Master jet base to Pensacola?

With a proposed move of a master jet base from Virginia Beach, Va., to Jacksonville treading water, U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller is trying to land the jets and 30,000 high-paying jobs in Northwest Florida.

Retired Navy Capt. Vann Goodloe said the Pensacola Bay Area's reputation as a center for Navy training might not be a good mix with an operational mission such as a master jet base.

For example, it could pose problems with how to use airspace.

"Navy does not like to mix training and operational flying," Goodloe said. "I don't see that as being a feasible option at all."

I guess the alpacas are safe...for now.

Never happen. There is too much going on in that airspace as it is, you don't need a sh!tload of Hornets and Rhinos running around there too. It's a pipedream for Rep. Miller.

+1....I'm pretty sure that P-Cola is already one of the busiest airspaces in the country... A master jet base would be over the top I think.

I agree with both, there is no more space in the sky. Also, where would these 30,000 people live? Wouldn't they also have to build another airport or extend runways at an existing airport? There is too much work involved in moving it to Pensacola. It won't happen.

Actually, there's plenty of room for them, as more sub-divisions keep going up w/ no one really to fill them (for the moment). NPA isn't exactly the busiest airport, either, so I'd think it could support a large portion of the fighters if the airspace could support it.

However, as others have already said, there's no way there's enough airspace to support it. Especially when, the other day, the field is VFR w/ a ceiling, but ATC wouldn't allow any lateral departures and only allowed On-Tops, all because they didn't want/couldn't to manage the airspace deconfliction w/ CR.

The infinite wisdom of a Mid.

You don’t think they could move the training commands to keep the combat jets closer to the Atlantic fleet. I love the idea. Those people in Pensacola would love to have us. We wouldn’t take up any airspace but over the water. The Whitings could keep their ops because we would just be in the warning areas. Plus, if we worked out a deal with the Air force, we could actually have a live rang. I can’t wait. Sorry FO’s but you’re out. Enjoy Texas.:icon_smil

You obviously have your finger on the pulse, out there in California. What part do you want to bet on? Eventually we’ll have to move somewhere.

That Pensacola becomes the east coast Master Jet Base - ever. I'm willing to put it in writing.

Nothing I love better than speculation that won't happen for years either way...

You put it in writing. I really don’t care. It would be a good fit for us. You must know something that the rest of us don’t, so do tell us. But, if you’re just stating your opinion, then try not being a c*ck for once in your life.

Unless I am completely off my rocker it appears as if you were the only one to say that it would happen, while everyone else was saying there is no room in the airspace...

I would think that there would be plenty of better locations to put the base...while the local population loves the military IMHO I don't think there is enough local infrastructur to support the addition of a large number of aircraft down here for many different factors; hanger space, space for new hangers, space to build new runways, room to build new housing, new road construction, etc...

Again, my humble opinion...

I'm a P'cola native (a real native, not a "my dad got stationed here when I was a kid"). I've done GA flying there since I was a teen, and my dad had been a realtor for many years. It's true that there's a lot of development going on now. They did a lot prior to the proposed Kitty Hawk BG that was due to be stationed on the gulf coast in the late 80's. What ended up being built still would have been short of what they'd have needed to support just the KH in P'cola. Fast forward to now - yes lots of development, but now most of it is well to the north beyond Cantonment. "Congrats on moving to P'cola everyone. Just be prepared to drive an hour to work." Not practical.

As for airspace - it's enough for CQ/FCLP dets to stage there. Can't imagine a full wing of Hornets/Rhinos trying to operate full-time with the Trawing at the same field and Whiting to the NE. No ranges nearby either (except Eglin, and they're always gainfully employed). I'm thinking Oceana is safe for a while if there's no 11th hour Cecil initiative.

And you have your finger on the pulse of the internal politics of the House of Representatives? Or the Navy Staff? I don't, but I doubt you do either.....:D Senator Trent Lott wanted the base in Meridian and it hasn't happened yet, so having one Representative try and get the Master Jet Base in Pensacola will probably do about as much good.

Oh yeah, you don't have to move anywhere. It might be good for training and all of the other stuff that makes sense, but when was the last time common sense played a part in a politicians' decision making, especially when it comes to BRAC?

Oh yeah, I think Pensacola would be a poor choice, but that is only my two cents......;)
