Is there a good book out there that I can read to learn about the parts of a ship and any other nautical information that might help on the exam.

Also, how similar were the mechanical comprehension and math questions to the questions on the gouge? Are they anything like the questions in the Arco book or is the gouge still the way to go?

I'm taking the exam in 3 days and I just found out it was a new version so im kinda freakin out here. Especially since my packet goes to the board in August. So anything will help.

Thanks.

I think the exam would have been easy w/o the ARCO book. It's a good comprehensive study guide, though. I used it, but I think I would have done almost as well w/o it. Don't worry, it's not that bad:)

I don't know for sure about the 3rd exam, I took form 2. But some of the questions were *very* similar to the ones on the gouge. I would study the gouge on here first and foremost, anything else that you study might come in handy, or it might not, but I know that the gouge will help you. The ARCO book is good to help you study and to see a similar format to the test. If you have any other questions fire away.

Good luck

First off don't get complacent with the study guide on this site. It sounds like people are relying on it too much and nothing else. Arco is a waste of money however. Use the study guide, a basic algebra book, dictionary, and the internet. Use the dictionary and internet to know your plane and ship parts that are on the guide. The problem with the guide is that they tell you the name for each part but not the purpose. Know the purpose of all the parts! On the new test you will not be identifying plane or ship parts. It's definitely not that easy. You will not need supplemental information for the mechanical section, the study guide will suffice. Just know your mechanical advantage formula. Math doesn't really need supplemental if you're confident in your math skills. If you think you need help, pick up a basic algebra book. Oh yeah, and study paragraph comprehension.
