Hey guys,

So...I've been doing practice exams all weekend out of Barrons and ARCO. I can score 100% on the math section, but I didn't time myself until today. Now I'm a little worried about the time crunch for math. 30 questions in 25 minutes -- that's 50 seconds per question.

Any suggestions on how to push through it faster? My buddy was telling me to basically guess on the ones that look like they might take too long...he had some acronym for it, too, but I can't remember what it was.

Guessing? Seriously?

Thanks!

Absolutely, unless you're a math whiz (I'm not:)). Your best bet is to go through all of the questions and answer the ones you know first. Then go back and try the ones you're not sure about.

I don't know exactly how many I guessed on in the math section, but it seemed like a lot. There's just not enough time to sit and think about one question for minutes at a time.

How do they convert the score to 9? How many can I get wrong and still get...say...a 7/9?

You guys were totally right. I don't know what I was worried about. It must be the Barrons book, it seems ever so slightly harder than the real thing. I guess that's a good thing, though.

I want to leave a note for other engineering students who are going to take the ASTB:

The guys who replied to me above are completely right. Just focus on accuracy and speed; I ended up with a few minutes of spare time at the end of the math section. Technically the material is simple, so don't sweat it. Your scores will turn out fine. Trust me!

To do that you're going to have to ditch the TI-89 and relearn how to do multiplication and division by hand. Another thing is...you're going to have to forget about all your high level math. It's useless here. The Barrons book has a lot of random off the wall math problems, but there is a lot more algebra on the real thing than what I saw in the practice tests. And that's a good thing, since the algebra on the real thing is just solving for variables. That said, the Barrons book still does a great job.

Oh yeah, and somebody wrote someplace on here to take a stopwatch with you. I guess it's a good idea if you take it on paper, but chances are you'll do the computer version and it has a timer.

I have searched everywhere online to find out how many questions you can miss to get a certain score, and I think I finally found one.

www.cnrc.navy.mil/noru/orojt/introduction.htm#1

From this page, I clicked on the ASTB Worksheet at the top of the page on the right column.

can someone interpret this spreadsheet for me? from this spreadsheet, about how many can you get wrong on each section to get a "7/7/7"? (I read that this is the score you should get to be "competitive") thank you!!!! :D

my interpretation is that these are the minimum requirements, but to the right you are able to know how many questions you can miss to get an exact score.

This spreadsheet appears to be OLD; Created in 1998 when OSO's could still grade the ASTB. This is no longer the case because NOMI grades/scores ALL ASTB now. While the spreadsheet appears to calculate the ASTB score, the fomulas may have changed because the test format has changed. Just my thoughts.

Do you think the OAR section by itself is scored the same now as it was in 1998?
