Motorcycle - To Sell Or Not To Sell: I Need Some Advice

Once again, I turn to you all on AW for some much-needed advice.

I have a motorcycle (2006 CBR 600RR) that I absolutely pamper. I got it for my 21st birthday - it was the first vehicle I ever bought new, and my first motorcycle. I have a very strong emotiona attachment to 'Angel,' but lately I have been thinking about selling, and here is why:

1. Health Risks - My application for commission hasn't been submitted to the board (goes up 15 Apr.), but if I am given a shot at SNA or SNFO, I feel like I should take a break from riding. I would hate to be given a chance to live the dream just to have it shot down because of a motorcycle accident. I am NOT a reckless driver, but I know how dangerous it is out there - especially with those soccer mom's driving their land yachts while eating their McChow and talking to Karen on their cell phone about what dress to wear to the speed-date tonight.:icon_rage

2. $$ - Those student loans are going to SUCK to pay back. I'm going to be on an internship this summer that I'm not getting paid for, and could really use the cash.

3. Will I really have time to get out and ride for fun as an officer? I know it depends on your designation...but I would hate for Angel to rot away in a garage.

Then again, I also see gas prices are going to hit 4 bucks per gallon, and I'm loving my 45-50 mpg. not to mention how much fun I have riding the mountain roads here in NC. :D

Anyway, thanks in advance for all of your help. Were any of you guys/ladies in my position before OCS?

Naming inanimate objects is ghey....:)

That is all.

I have ridden for years and didn't until I was nearly done with advanced. Didn't want to break myself. As far as missing the riding...NC doesn't equal S. Texas or the Florida Panhandle...you won't be missing much.

As long as you have travel bags, I'd keep it. Parking is usually much more convenient, and the weather where you could be heading is good for riding year round. D & D cycles is in the P-cola area and they are big sponsors for riding events.

Fwiw, when I get to p-cola next month, I'll be looking for another motorcycle.

I wouldn't tell anyone you named your bike either.

Yeah I'd sell it, because deep down your want to parlay that money into a new HD! You'll have safety thrown down your throat to the point of gagging (MSF classes, Command risk forms etc), but it's still worth it in the end, and you actually do learn a lot of valuable things in the advanced and group MSF classes.. Now spend those 2 pennies wisely

If you plan on going to south Texas, don't by a Triumph. I haven't found a single Triumph dealer anywhere close to here (which is a shame, I would have bought one). Between the time we checked into API and were about half way through primary, about 10-15 of my friends all had motorcycles. You'll find time to ride, maybe only once a week at times. I'd say keep it.

There is one in Austin. There used to be one off of Kostoryz, but they got bought out by another dealer and dropped Triumph.

I've not needed a dealer here. What few things I can't get locally, I order online.

Air filter is about the only "Trumpet Specific" part I can't get here.

Sell it and buy a GSXR:D

I sold my bike about 2 months ago for the same reason you are, and now I regret it. With gas going up I am considering buying a new one, and I miss the 0200 rides on 59 with clear night and a full tank of AVGAS.

1. True. If you break yourself as an SNA, its iffy as to whether or not that waiver to continue while NPQ will ever be granted by NPC. Once you do get winged, though, waivers do come. Trust me, I know.:D But, if you were the type of person that liked to live without any risk whatsoever, you probably would never have applied to Naval Aviation in the first place.

2. If $$ is that much of a factor, sell your car.

3. That depends on you. I know plenty of guys who bought bikes with all that tax free pay after their first cruise, only to let it sit in their garage unused. If you're a rider, you'll make time; if you bought one cause they're cool, you won't have time - sounds like you're the former.

Take the MSF courses. The riding portion of the beginner course will be a waste of time, but the class room is well worth it if you've never had it. The experienced rider course places much more emphasis on riding skills with minimal review of classroom topics - the reverse of what it probably should be.

Ditto on the HD comments. After 15 years and 6 motorcyles (3 race bikes), the Road King has been the most enjoyable one yet - but it took damn near killing myself (litterally) racing to get me to slow down to an HD.

Also - never name an inanimate object unless it's primary purpose is to toss ordnance down-range.

The riding in the Florida Panhandle is actually not that bad, you just have to know where to look.

Never been to TX.

100LL, PCIII mapped out correctly, and you can get clean detonation. Its a little hard to tell the difference by sitting on it, but you can see it on the dyno.
