Moving to Okinawa

Im a single officer moving to Okinawa (MCAS Futenma). I understand we are living on base, but I was wondering what if any furniture to bring. If possible, I would like to bring as much as I can (ie. couches, bed, dresser to put in my BOQ room). If this is not possible, I guess it will all go in non-temp storage and I wont see it for 3 years. I definitely want to bring my flatscreen TV and stereo and some other items for my room, but I am unsure of what I can fit in there and what needs to go to storage. Ive tried to contact base housing/BOQ on Futenma, but the numbers are out of service on their website. If anyone has a current number to call it would be appreciated.

Subscribing. -46s Oki is #1 on the preference sheet so I'm probably going to heading that way too. I've got a Navy Wife in tow though.

Oh come on now! I know some of you people have been out to Oki! Harrier dude, I've read about your blue van with spinners, you've got to have at least a little insight.

I've been there three times now, but don't have any idea what there is room for in the BOQ, or what the MCAS housing number is... It might be worth you guys to call your prospective squadrons to see if they can give you any help with contacting the housing office... If you end up having more room then you have furniture- you will have plenty of options to acquire more during your stay... either through the exchange system, yard sales in family housing or used furniture stores off base.

When are you going? You should get a sponsor (or have your admin guys call and request one if you don't have one) and they should help you out with every single question you have. I live in Atsugi and I asked totally random questions before coming over here and they were more than happy to answer. Everyone coming over here understands you don't have a clue what it's like and obviously you can't visit before moving.

In Atsugi, single officers staying on base get a furnished room/apartment. I brought my stuff anyway and took their furniture and moved some into storage, some out on the porch, and some into the spare bedroom. But I really wanted MY stuff.

Sorry, bro. I've been busy in Alabama lately and didn't see this until now.

I lived on the BOQ at Camp Courtney, but I've been to all the other BOQs at one point or another as well.

BLUF: don't bring squat except your big screen TV and a computer in terms of household goods if you are going to live in the Q.

They USED to let single guys live out in town, but I've HEARD that this is no longer the case. YMMV.

The bed/couch/tables they provided were all good to go. The couch wasn't great, but you have it in your room anyway and not all that much space.

I don't think that you rate much in terms of TMO weight allowance. Everything you will need is already there or is readily acquired on the island.

Don't bring too much. You'll have more problems storing it than you would have had finding it once you get there.

BTW.....my van made it through two passdown owners before it burst into flames, so you'll have to find a new one. Ghetto spinners are $25 at the Kadena auto shop. Well worth the investment.

Good luck!

DAMN! I was going to see if I could find it when/if I got out there. I might just try and recreate it if the spinners are only $25.

I'll tell you what.....when you get there and buy a Toyota High Ace Super Custom (fairly easy to find), paint it blue (5 cans of krylon and about 10 minutes), and put your own slogans on each windshield in stick on letters (mine were "living the dream" and "don't hate the playa....hate the game").......

I'll spring for the ghetto spinners, fuzzy dice, and fuzzy dashboard.

Fair enough?

Got the call last Friday. I'm headed to Okinawa to fly the Mighty Battle Phrog! Winging on the 12th. A friend emailed me some gouge about moving to Oki, I'll go through it and put up the important info a little later.
