Moving to P'cola Question

Hey Guys,

I was wondering what were some of your experiences when making the move to P'cola for API from your NROTC unit, USNA, etc. Did you find a place (i.e. an apartment, house) online before you arrived? Or did you just make reservations on the phone to the BOQ to stay for a few days so you could find a place off base? I heard there was a sheet with a list of ppl looking for roommates somewhere on base (Im assuming the housing office).

Anyways, please share your own experiences and what you did to prepare for the move and find a place off-base. Advice on finding a reasonably affordable apt or house renting a room would be great. Gracias :D

I'm moving back to pcola next week for advanced, and I'm facing all sorts of problems that I didn't really deal with when I went there for API. Namely, there are no frigging places to live. When I showed up there last year, I got into the BOQ for my TLE time, no problem, and while I was there, looked for a place to live. I was looking at a few sites online, and eventually found a room for rent. Now, however, everyone's still reeling from Ivan and Dennis, so everything's just plain fvcked. I still haven't found a place to live, and I'm getting pissed off.

At the NAS Pcola housing office there are rental listings and roomates, but as per my conversation with them yesterday, they won't release any info until you actually get there. (The people at Whiting's housing office were decidedly more helpful/pleasant to deal with.) I suggest calling someone you know and asking to crash on a couch for a few days while you search, and maybe they know of a place to rent or are looking for a roomate. You never know.

Having roomates is absolutely the way to go if you're single. Maximizes your BAH, gives you someone to study with/question, you don't turn into the Unibomber living by yourself, AND you have someone else's milk to drink when you run out! SCORE!

For the move itself... I did a DITY move from Quantico to pcola, as I really didn't have much. Just stuffed it all in my car and left, and I did the same thing when I moved to Corpus. Now that I actually own furniture, though, the government's moving everything but the valuable stuff/uniforms/clothing.

Good luck!

Pensacola's housing market reminds me of NoVA- absolutely nuts... more people wanting to live there then there are places to live.
I knew people who lived on couches for weeks, not just days while looking for a place.

Fezz- Start calling places... now. When we were moving down there, several of us called dozens of apt complexes and all except for 2 were full. Ended up lucking out and living at governors gate. The big problem with the apartments is that they won't normally hold a place for you until you get them your deposit. Try using the whole, "Hold it 24/48hrs while i overnight the check to you"... may work if they are in a good mood. Or, if you know someone down i P'Cola now, have them go drop off a deposit check for you. If you call places and they don't have any openings, keep calling back because people PCS out of Pensacola all the time. Unfortunately however, you may have to go on a waiting list.

Talk realitors as well (if you can get any to return your phone calls that is)

Good luck.

I have two rooms for rent in a house 7min from the back gate if either of you are interested. See my other post in the API thread, or email me at aschollmb@ureach.com.

Yea, I read your thread but I doubt it will be available when I get there. I commission 27 AUG and havent received my orders so I dont know if Im staying here or going straight to P'cola for IFS/API. Thanks for the info though.

Another room for rent, 15 minutes from NASWF, roughly 30ish to NASP. On a canal off the Blackwater Bay, 3 bedroom 2 bath job, both current roommates KNDZ studs. One winging in mid-late september, the other in Decemberish?

Looking for a roommate anytime between now and then.

I dunno - regular sized bedroom. But the rest of the house comes with it. And when I get outa here in September, the huge-mongous bedroom'll be up for dibs.

If you're still interested, I'll take a tape measure to it when I get back from CCX on Monday.
