navy aircraft designations

I am studying for the ASTB and am hoping someone might be able to answer a simple question for me. For the aircraft designations and ship designations, is it enough to know, for instance, that A designates attack craft or is it necessary to know all subsequent models and modifiers.
also, on the astb there is a question listing the nicknames of certain aircraft. on the test, do these come up and, if so, are there certain ones to look out for since there are quite a few.
thanks for all of the help. hopefully, once I take the test, I will be able to help others out in my situation.

I don't recall have any questions like that on my form of the test, although I did have some detailed questions about other nautical/aviation related items. My advice is to study up the most on areas you know you're weak in, and then study the detail stuff when you have everything else mastered. They have top fit a lot of stuff in the aviation/nautical section, so it's highly doubtful you'll have a whole series of questions asking about aircraft designations.

It would be good to know about ship designations like CVN, DDG, and so on. I saw stuff like that when I took the ASTB last week. Daniel

You may also want to look at different types of civilian sailing vessels. I think they asked what a barq is or something similar to that. I just remember everyone looking up at the end of the section and asking if anyone knew that answer. Don't dwell on it though. I don't know how many guys actually get that one right. I made it and still have no idea what a barq is.
