The only pilot aboard was found alive a short time later and was hoisted out of the water by a Navy helicopter.
<sarcasm> Do they sometimes purposely put more than one pilot aboard an F/A-18 (other than the RAG of course)?</sarcasm>

News people absolutely kill me when they report on aviation stories, military or civilian. In an area that facts should be important, it always seems they neglect that center-piece to their story......"an airplane fell out of the sky today"....."the engine 'stalled' shortly after takeoff".....blah, blah, blah

Sorry about this threadjack, I'll try to keep it short, but what kind of critiques and inquiries and such happen after a loss of an aircraft (or even worse of both the aircraft and pilot)? Is it as excruciating as one would expect or worse?

Well, I'd be willing to bet that a good percentage of the general public doesn't know the difference between an F/A-18C and an F/A-18F, which carries two crewmembers. That may have been the reason for the clarification. (Though I suppose 'crewmember' would have been more accurate than 'pilot')

I would be willing to bet that any "specialist" technical profession (doctors, aviators, etc.) laughs when the media tries to report on them. They know nothing about the topic and try to sound like they do. Comedy ensues.

(No offense in advance if our resident evil liberal journalist happens to join the discussion. :D)

Lots of information there in just 7 words.
Yes you know something about the crash.
No you can't tell us because of OPSEC
Yes the pilot was seriously hurt.
Am I correct?
I do hope that the pilot will be ok.
