Navy/Marine Rank Memorization

I am busy memorizing the Big 4. I had a question though regarding the memorization and recitation of the rank structure. . .What exactly is it we should be memorizing? Once at OCS, is it simply reciting the rank structure and rank insignia from Ensign/2nd Lieutentant to Admiral/General (ie, "Ensign, one gold bar; LTJG, one silver bar; Lieutenant, two silver bars; etc.")? Thank you for the advice/suggestions. You all are great.

You need to know what the rank insignia is for every rank and where it would be. Just look for any gouge on the rank insignia and you'll be able to understand what I'm talking about. Ensign has more to it that the collar bar device. There is also shoulder boards and sleeves on the service dress blues. This goes for other ranks.

You need to know every piece of rank insignia for officers and enlistedmen for the Navy and Marine Corps. Just for a hint, at OCS the most frequently asked ranks are E-7 to E-9 in both the Navy and Marine Corps. You also can't say Lieutenant JG, you must say out the Junior Grade. It's a trick because an officer will ask with JG.

And their insignia.

"Sir/Ma'am, an O-2 in the United States Navy is a Lieutenant Junior Grade. His insignia is a one silver bar collar device, or one 1/2 inch gold stripe outboard of one 1/4 inch gold stripe outboard of one gold five pointed star on black shoulder boards, or one 1/2 inch gold stripe below one 1/4 inch gold stripe below one gold five pointed star on service dress blue uniform sleeves." (etc. for each rank)

Straight from the "Naval Officer Delayed Entry Program: Guide to Success" that my recruiter gave me. It's a flip booklet of different stuff you should know about OCS (or ODS). It makes for a good study guide, you should try to pick one up if your recruiter has any around.

Alternatively, if you can't find it, here's a site for rank structure that's harder to read but about the same: http://userhp.konnect.net/hansen83/ranks.txt

Hope this helps.

Watch out, the Guide To Success is old and down right wrong in some places. Look for up to date online stuff.

...just remember that the insignia for "Master Gunnery Sergeant" is a "bursting bomb," not a pineapple, which is what it really looks like.

This site says that it doesn't need to be memorized verbatim, but you do need to use certain terms to describe the ranks. Once you leave out the rank description, there isn't much left to say. What gives?
It means 3 chevrons over crossed rifles over 2 rockers is the same thing as 2 rockers under crossed rifles under 3 chevrons. You have to be able to describe the said rank, but not in the same manner as repeating the general orders of a sentry. Make sense?

In my DEP guide, the CWO ranks are 2-4, but online its 1-5. I thought the Navy only had CWO 2-4?

WO-1 exists in the Army and Marine Corps. It does not in the Navy or Coast Guard (or the Air Force, which doesn't have ANY WO's). So they're both right. Just remember - the Navy has CWO2 - 5, USCG has CWO2 - 4, Army & Marine Corps has WO-1 - CWO-5.
