NEED HELP! Trying to identify this downed aircraft I came across in Iraq!

Ok, it's been many years and I never gave it much thought, but I came across a downed Marine Harrier when I was in Iraq. I have pictures of the crash site along with a shot of whats left of the tail section. There are identifying numbers on the tail, and I wanna see if I can identify the squadron, and maybe (eventually), find the pilot etc. The area where this jet was down was by the Medina RGFC's staging area and an ADA site. Attached is a link to my Flickr account and the picture of the tail section. If someone can help ID this 'craft by all means reply and point me in the right direction.

Sincerly,

Ron Findlay

Unfortunately it wasn't the only one. An A-10 was shot down near our position too, and Alpha Company reported they witnessed an F-16(?) crash north of their position in January.

In Iraq huh? According to this data it was near Kuwait City. I'm going by a partial Bureau#...470.

Yes! We were in the north-west corner of Kuwait, but still in Iraq if memory serves me. We were with 1st Armor Division, VII Corp (3rd BDE 3rd INF DIV) when we found this crash site. Do you have the link to this info?

Hey thanks. I read the incident report and can't belive that it was only hours prior to us finding the site that he was shot down. I contacted the admin of his former units website since they were disbanded, and will pass along all the info I have to them. A very sad day, but now my mind is a little more at peace having found-out who he was. Thank you so much for all your help.

I noticed the mention of COL Walsh, then Capt Walsh, the Commodore of TW-5 in the article. I know he wears the Purple Heart and had been shot down but had never read about it.

Did Capt. Reginald "Woody" Underwood bear any relation to later LT/LCDR(?) Chad "Nutz" Underwood of VFA-122 Rhino Demo team fame?

Are the Rhino demo WSOs famous?

No, just him. It's because of the way that Rob Reider used to introduce him and his pilot, then-LT Mike "Tina" Turner at airshows:

"LT Chad Underwood.... CALLSIGN .... 'NUTZ'!!!!!!!!!! " like he was introducing someone at TOPGUN or something... :D

There was a Harrier lost in ODS in Kuwait Bay. The VA-36 A-6's were inbound to provide rescap but the pilot got picked up and captured. This might have been him. Says on his bio ODS but no details and doesn't mention the POW medal and his pic isn't big enough to show.

Everything I've seen indicates (then) Capt. Walsh was picked up, and he's not on pownetwork.org's list of ODS POW's. The AV-8 POW's were Capt. Sanborn and Berryman.

The most detailed account I've found of Capt. Walsh's shootdown:

Or if you really have time on your hands:

I think I might print off a copy for the ready room.

MAKE TIME! That is the single best item I have seen posted on Airwarriors in my time here. This should be mandatory reading for anyone who goes over the beach.

I participated in the SAR for "Bird" Dwyer who was our asst CAG LSO (CAG Paddles was Guad on here, now CNATRA)
