New CFI requirements

So I read the other day that CFIs are now required to have a TSA account if they exercise the privileges of their certificate. This is not just for those at a school house anymore, but any CFI, even if you just do one BFR or IPC a year.

So, after navigating the standard crappy federal government user interface, I made an account. But I'm not clear if I need to do anything else and haven't seen anything else about the new rule to know for sure.

Just wondering if anyone else that CFIs knows more details. The only reason I'm worried about it right now is in case a friend wants an IPC or BFR, but I don't have a pressing need for it otherwise.

From a good friend who teaches part time at a flight school.

"I don’t have a TSA account but I had to do the TSA CBT to instruct at the school. It’s a 5 minute see something-say something brief. I did it when I did my CFI rehack. "

It's a Final Rule that went into affect the other day. More info I found here:

But at least the GA security awareness training is only required every 24 months now.

Are you referring to the TSA Security Awareness Training or an additional training. I ask because I've done the TSA training at some point, but I can't remember where (FIRC maybe?). But my personal airport also requires a security awareness training every 24 months to have a badge. I find this amusing because the airport where I work does not require that.

I was just referring to the TSA training.

This is a thing unfortunately. +1 on the 'mission creap' comment.

Along with this lovely gift, expiration dates on Flight Instructor certificates are no longer a thing.

Now if I could just convince my local FSDO to renew my Flight Instructor certificate on the basis of my AF Form 8. @HuggyU2 ?

Chuck,

Well... I used to go "FSDO shopping" until I got the result I wanted.

I hear that's not as easy anymore though. 🤷‍♂️

I've wondered if company IPs would be allowed a similar courtesy. You don't technically endorse a student for his line check, but you're still doing all the same things a CFI does before a Part 91 checkride, just without all the mumbo-jumbo in the logbook.

I'm sure the FAA would find that unacceptable.

Now I'm wondering, as an individual CFI not using an LLC or employer for legal coverage, what on God's Green Earth do I put in the "Flight Training Provider (School) Name"?

First Name Last Name, CFI

Type = Part 61

FAA Certification = your Flight Instructor Certificate #

OK, thanks. I created an account, and it went back to the home screen. No email confirmation, no chance to make a password... so no obvious way to login with the account I just created.

As gub'mint websites go, this one seems pretty legit in its dysfunction. Barring reporting requirements on foreign nationals in flight training (I have none, only teaching US persons at the moment), I guess I'm good to provide services as a CFI, IAW with the new regulation?

I think it takes a business day to process - you will get an email at the address you provided with creds!
