To answer a post that vanished:) I did research CMC's before I accepted a commission. Almost all were infantry I believe one was artillery. Traditionally it seems that Assistant CMC is aviation.
About 1/3 were naval academy lowest service academy leaders of any service which was actually a big reason why I did join the corps.
