Been a long time since I posted here. About three years ago I was here asking questions about vision requirements and age limits, thinking I would be joining up soon to start my path toward a pair of wings.
Well, obstacles kept getting in the way but at least I've managed to take this first step. I don't know if I'll ever get to fly but it's a dream I won't give up on until I'm just too old to apply.
I originally signed up for MOS 0317 (scout/sniper) but due to a paperwork glitch my entry into boot camp was delayed and that reserve slot is no longer available. I'd still like to try out for it if I qualify on the rifle range and such but since I couldn't get an infantry MOS in southern California (I'm from Illinois but had to enlist out of Orange County...looooong story ) I don't think that will be an option.
What I ended up with was MOS 7011, Exeditionary Airfield Systems Technician. Still trying to figure out what that means but it looks like I'll be assigned to a reserve unit at MCAS Miramar after I finish boot, MCT and the MOS training which is apparently at Pensacola.
I enlisted partly because I really wanted to be a scout/sniper but also because I don't have a degree and wanted to get whatever assistance Uncle Sam was willing to offer (plus, I feel I need the kick in the ass that Marine boot camp will give me). I'm hoping to become a full time student at UCSD or another school in the area and work my way towards an AE degree. Not quite sure how I'm going to pay for it just yet.
For the record I'm 25 now, birthday in February. My vision is pretty bad but from my understanding within the limits for PRK/LASEK/Epi-LASEK (roughly 20/400 in each eye with slight astigmatism). I've got floaters that annoy the crap out of me but they're not debilitating.
My biggest concern is that by the time I finish my degree and can start the path to commissioning I'll be too old to apply for flight training. I assume there are waiver options and such so I'll still keeping trying pretty much until they tell me to stop asking.
I'm hoping that this job will get me some needed exposure to aviators and the aerospace field in general. I don't know if it'll help me figure things out but I'm guessing it'll at the very least whet my appetite.
Anyways, if any of you guys are at Miramar expect to see me pop in...I'm guessing early 2009?
