Found this site while looking for study material for the ASTB. Did find a lot of good material here by the way. A little about myself, I'm a student at Michigan State right now studying food industry management, and I plan on going to OCS next summer. Everything about the Marine Corps impresses me, and I'm excited about having the opportunity of becoming a Marine officer. I love the fact that it's such a challenge, and how the Corps only selects the best of the best. My goal is to land a job as an F-18 pilot in the Corps.

Anyways I'm a little concerned about the ASTB. It's sounds difficult, and I'm hoping for an impressive score. I was able to score a 97 on the ASVAB without any prior studying. I'm doing plenty of studying for the ASTB, in comparison to the ASVAB what should I expect from the ASTB as far as difficulty?

The ASVAB and the ASTB are very different tests. I scored a 95 on the ASVAB with no studying, and I failed the ASTB the first time around...

Also, you do realize that your chances of being a helo pilot in the Marine Corps are pretty good, right?

Welcome to the 'family'! Good luck here, and in everything else. Remember to keep thick skin.

Oh and also don't say anything gay. :D

Ya, just to let you know: you don't "land" a job as a Hornet pilot in the Corps (or the Navy, for that matter). You work your ass off. And you could just as easily get something else, even if you're #1. All about needs of the service. Helo much? :D

What did you have trouble with? I'm assuming that the math, reading, and mechanical portions are similar, so I'm spending most of my time going over the aviation/nautical portion of the test.

I haven't given much thought about being a helo pilot. I've yet to talk to a recruiter about my options in aviation. Pursuing a career on the ground was a less complicated process than becoming a pilot, so I haven't looked in depth to the selection process yet.

No not prior enlisted. Thought about it, but decided to get a degree first.

Have you been to the OSO on Grand River yet? He should be able to spin you up on aviation options.

Just to add on to this - take it one step at a time. You have a goal to become an Officer in the Marine Corps. It's okay to have long-term goals like flying jets, but people tend to not take you seriously when you waltz right into what amounts to an online wardroom with "I want to fly Hornets in the Marines." Not accusing - just take this whole process in baby steps, and heed the knowledge(s) passed along on this forum...it will serve you well.

actually..if his brain is a sponge...apart from the good military gouge he's basically going to know a lot about guns, sex, hookers, witty comebacks and blow after he is done with this site...oh and how to use a search engine.

well that's what i've learned anyway.

All it takes is one weekend in Hollywood to learn about all that. :D

I would recommend the Arco book. If you're up in EL this summer, I will give you (for free) my book plus all of the gouge/study guides that I have compiled (I won't need it anymore). The book helped a ton, and the practice tests were *exactly* like the real thing.

PM me if interested (I'm up on Division/Beech ~4 blocks north of Albert for reference).

edit: errrr If I still have them and can find them. I *may* have tossed all of that stuff when I was packing up to move out of the dorms for the summer, BUT I think I've still got it laying around. As it was mentioned a few posts up, check out the Marine OSO on Grand River, right in between Bubble Island and, ironically, a head shop.

BAD idea...then msumarine walks in and Rick Hansen pops out and says "HI I'm Rick Hansen...this is a dateline NBC special about online predators who meet under age children from the internet."

After that, the ASTB will be the LEAST of his worries, m0t..you just want everyone in jail so your selection board competition is limited.... :D:D

Don't listen to that garbage. The ARCO book is good to study but there is other gouge to look at too. The ARCO is NOT *exactly* like the ASTB but it is what I consider to be one of the closest. The aviation/nautical info is pretty rough at times if you aren't prepared.
