New Motorcycle Riding Rules

If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.

I've heard that the rule for riding motorcycles onto Whiting has changed for us, but I can't find anything here or on Google. Anyone got a link to the new rules?

I've heard nothing via the chain, but this MARADMIN indicates that we are no longer required to wear a brightly colored/reflective vest.:

CMC SD (ESB 21-02) - PER ESB GUIDANCE, DRAFT A MESSAGE IMMEDIATELY WHICH ELIMINATES COLOR AND REFLECTIVITY REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE TO MOTORCYCLE OUTERWEAR AS SPECIFIED IN REFERENCE B. THIS MESSAGE EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATES THE REQUIREMENT TO WEAR A "MOTORCYCLE VEST" DURING DAY OR NIGHT, AS WELL AS ANY QUANTIFICATION OF COLOR OR REFLECTIVITY REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO MOTORCYCLE OUTERWEAR. ALL OTHER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) REQUIREMENTS SHALL REMAIN. THIS CHANGE WILL BE CODIFIED IN THE NEXT RELEASE OF REFERENCE B. [COMPLETE - SEE REFERENCE C.]

I haven't yet found reference C, so I haven't actually put this to the test yet.

The rules changed slightly a while ago for the blue side, so I suspect it's the same for you guys, as I can't imagine having a separate set of rules in a joint training environment. The reflective vest is now optional (though recommended) for daytime riding. At night, you still need to wear some kind of retro-reflective material.

FYI, most Navy/Marine instructions aren't going to be found via Google, and the ones you do find are probably old & out of date. Ask your command's admin department for the current instructions. If you're interested in the most current motorcycle policies (including any special policies your command or wing may impose), go to your Safety department and they should have all the answers.

3) ESB MEMBERS (ESB 21-03) - NLT 30 JUNE 2009, PROVIDE INPUT TO ACMC (VIA CMC SD) REGARDING A POTENTIAL CHANGE TO REFERENCE B THAT WOULD MANDATE PROTECTIVE JACKETS FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDERS. MEMBERS SHOULD CONSIDER ANY POTENTIAL REQUIREMENT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SPORTBIKE RIDERS AND OTHER RIDERS.

We don't have to wear orange vests anymore.... cool! But we MAY have to wear "protective jackets" all the time.... bummer.

The reflective vest thing has been rescinded for USN daytime, but I still occasionally get the random gate guard who did not get the memo. So I wear my Village People Construction Worker vest to come on to base, but that's it. Once I'm on base, it goes back in the bag unless I leave after dark (not often).

The rules say retro-reflective, and most people have taken that to mean that it has to be the bright colored vests, but my AlpineStars leather jacket has a reflective coating on it, but its not immediately apparent. I've asked people in passing if my jacket will pass muster, and when they say no, they cant explain why. Any ideas?

Bring a copy of the instruction with you when you ride.
