on every post referring to the the ASTB gouge, there is talk of several forms of it. many ways to study. so far, i've only found one, and that was the sticky posted at the top of this forum header. is this the same one that's referred to as the marine's guide or brad's gouge. i'm pretty new obviously, so any help would be appreciated as well as additional links and info. thanks.

Generally speaking, the ASTB is the same format for each form. The difference is in the questions you actually see. By studying the gouges and knowing your information down cold, you will do well regardless of which form you take. I used the ARCO Military Flight Aptitude Test Book, as well as the gouges listed below:

www.navygouge.com/newstuff/ASTB_gouge/ASTB2.pdf
www.geocities.com/tiffanypbaker/gouge/astb.htm

And for nautical info:
http://www.boat-ed.com/wa/course/p1-3_boatparts.htm

Study hard (and smart) and ask the people here at airwarriors questions if you get stumped or don't understand something. Good luck!!

On the test located at www.geocities.com/tiffanypbaker/gouge/astb.htm,
does anyone have an idea how problems 33 and 46 are solved? Most the questions seem relatively simple on this sample test, which is a good thing, I hope. But those two stump me, are they simpler than I am making them out to be? How did anyone arrive at the correct answers?

For question 33, draw two upward paths away from a point (the carrier) with an angle of 60 degrees between them. Close the triangle at the top to indicate the distance between them at the desired point (1200mi). If both planes are traveling at the same speed, this makes an equilateral triangle. That means each plane has traveled 1200mi along its path. 1200mi/500mph = 12/5hr = 2 2/5hr, or answer A.

Question 46 is drawn deceptively. If segment AD is 5 units, and the area of 'rectangle' (drawn as a square) is 10, then segments AB and DC are 2 units each (Area = length x width). If point E is at the same 'height' as points A and B, then point E is 5 units 'high' - that is, above the DC baseline. The area of a triangle is 1/2 x base x height - with a base (DC) of 2 units and a height (E to baseline) of 5 units, we have 1/2 x 2 x 5 = 5, again answer A.

Hope this helps.

TitoJ, that helped a lot. Thank you for the swift reply.

In case anyone else has a hard time with those two, for 33 it was realizing that 60 degree triangles are equilateral and that all triangles add up to 180, so all the angles are 60 degrees.

For 46 I kept thinking, how do I find the area of an obtuse triangle? When in fact, the area is the same as an other triangle as long as you know the base and height.

Does anyone know how this sample test compares in difficulty and content to the actual test?

Yeah baby!! I knew those two...I'm getting better. I'm actually starting to think i might have a chance on this test in two weeks.

I'm taking mine on May 4th. I'm beginning to get pretty obsessive with it, came home today with 10 books on aviation history and GRE stuff. But, better to come in way overprepared and laugh at it afterwards I figure. I remember taking the AFOQT and thought you had to know formulas for some of those questions, but its all just very simple mental tricks that you have to think about in a very logical fashion. I just hope its really similar to this sample test.

Does anyone know where I can find a full-length practice test of the new ASTB, e.g. all 6 sections including the aviation supplement and the reading section?

No, it doesn't exist.

Thank you for the quick reply. Does anyone have any recommendations on material to use to study for the new one? I have found and read all the gouge info linked on this site, but it doesn't seem to be very substantial... i just want to make sure i've been exposed to everything that's going to be on the test.
