I was curious as to the role of an NFO during an airshow. What exactly do they do second seat during the show? Most of the F-14s and F-18s (those that carry a crew of two) that have flown at the few airshows I have been to have had the NFO with them ... thanks.

SA...airspeed crosscheck read out...altitude crosscheck and readout...radio comms...command ejection capability.

Basically every amanuever has a preset a/s and alt it starts and or finishes at and has certian parameters it has to meet mid-event. The NFO hawks all that to backup the pilot in the event one is not met. At which point he calls for a bailout (means abort of the manuever) and fly away to reset for the next event or knock it off.

Ever see a manuever at an airshow that di not look 100% complete. That is most likely what happened.

Hope this helps...
