NFO transition to pilot after first service term/contract is complete?

I was wondering if anyone knows, or has experience transferring from NFO to pilot after their initial contract is complete? For example a 24 year old gets selected for NFO training, they complete their 6 year obligation and now they want to be a pilot. However, they are now 31 years old and over the Navy's age limit for pilot training. Would they still be allowed to transition to a pilot spot since they already have naval flight experience and knowledge?

Does the Navy make an exception for NFOs who want to change after their obligation is complete? Or would a NFO need to try to transition into pilot training before they reach the age limit?

Thanks

This had been discussed at length multiple times on the site. There is a very similiar thread going on right now.

Use the search function.

The thread going on right now only talks about transitioning immediately or shortly following OCS or NFO training, not after the full term of a contract has been completed or about being over the age limit. I also read many other threads that had similar questions about transitioning but didn't seem to answer my question specifically.

If you could provide a link to a thread that answers my question I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Or you could use a little initiative and use the search function like I recommended.

Officer = initiative.

However, just for you...yes, yes, yes, no. It's the exception and very hard to do.

Sweep the leg..
That's a pretty odd question...why would you want to know how that scenario plays out anyways?...are you expecting to do that.

I don't know what the policy says now, but when it initially came back 5 or 6 years ago, it specifically said no age waivers. And ditto to what MasterBates said.

I'm not up to date on the waivers but I thought the age limit was limited to your commission date. i.e. Must be commissioned prior to 31 years of age. I'm not sure if that is the exact wording or not. The wording would make a difference. You also need to read the actual instruction. That might answer all your questions.

My advice to you, is to start drinking heavily.

And, to let this be the last time you ever mention doing any kind of designator or platform change until you're walking out the door of your first Fleet squadron with signed fitrep in hand. Trust me. You can't really do anything until then anyway, and in the meantime all you'll do is p*ss off your bubbas, and nothing good comes of that.

I was 30 when I began the transition. I got my second wings when I was 31.

I don't know about the Navy rules, but we just had a Marine NFO-to-pilot that went through in his late 30s.

1. Good luck on the application.

B. Echoing what others have said, don't bank on a transition.

III: If you don't want to be an NFO, don't put it on your application.

d. If you do get selected for NFO, don't have the SNFO "I wanted to be a pilot" chip on your shoulder. You won't have fun in the training command, and you won't have fun afterwards. You'll be sitting in you squadron (if you get winged) miserable thinking "why did I do this NFO thing" everytime you see a guy with one anchor. You don't want to be that guy. I know a few of them, and only one got winged.

Cheers,
Bubba
