NFOs in demand this year?

Any truth to what I hear that there are too many SWOs and too many Pilots, but NFO's are in really high demand?

Yep - its true. The SWO community is 'full' as is (of course) the pilot community. The NFOs and Nukes, though, are still hurting for people.

I don't know if it's so much a demand, but with the option of getting eye surgery, ANYONE can become a pilot ....so the FO community is shy a few people out of the NROTC pipeline.

I don't know...maybe things have changed...but a year and a half ago, when I selected, aviation slots were few and far between. I had to claw to my FO slot...But numbers could have changed...oh well...my 2 cents.

Is there are limit on how bad your eyes can be before surgery that can prevent you from getting an FO slot? My left eye is -5.00 and my right is -4.25, so I'm pretty blind. Would I be able to get surgery and then become an NFO?

You're OK. The limit is -8.00, which is really friggin' blind. With your eyesight, you can go down the NFO pipeline and get PRK later.

Or you could be a pilot... fly helos... pick stuff up, set it down... if you're lucky pick some more stuff up on the way back...

Sweet! Now I'm not autoSWO....though I wouldn't be devastated if I was, I'm just happy that I have some say in my career path now. SWO would be ok too.

Whoa, hold on there, things change. Never expect that you'll get an aviation selection cause the needs of the navy change every year. They might have too many aviators when it comes time for you to select ... it's a roller coaster out there, so expect the worst and hope for the best. When I was a 4/c midn, almost everyone who applied for SNA got it, now not so much, things change!

Have you heard anything about orders or report dates yet? How about the IFS for SNFO's? My Aviation Officer here in Tampa is hearing that we're getting the funding for IFS for both SNFO and SNA.

Oh I didn't mean that I was automatically going to get NFO. I'm just happy they changed the rules in terms of eyesight, so that I am able to put FO down as a choice.

No I haven't heard anything yet. I know I definitly want to do IFS here in Jax, I was told we have that option as SNFOs long as we are stashed long enough. Hopefully we find out soon, cause I need to know where I'm gonna live and whom I'm gonna live with ASAP! Let me know how things work out for you.

NFO's can transition to pilots after their first fleet tour...There are a lot of requirements but it's possible. Just don't tell your IP's that you REALLY wanted to be a pilot...They might not like that too much...
