No-cost TAD for IFS? Marriage?

Hey, haven't been here in awhile, so hello to everyone who might remember me. Anyway, I did some searching and couldn't find a lot of stuff here on this:

I'm finishing up my masters out at the Air Force Institute of Technology (yeah... Air Force... I'll leave that for another time...) in Ohio. I'll be done in June. I wanted to go back to Minnesota (where I graduated) to do IFS before heading down to API. It would go faster, clear out space down in FL, and I'd be able to go be with the golf-foxtrot (maybe get married? I'm thinking long-term here). It would be no-cost TAD, as I understand it, so they don't pay per diem or anything.

I called the IFS office down at Pensacola and they thought I'd have to PCS to FL and then see if I could go back to MN from there. I don't mind PCSing to FL - better BAH anyway - but I'd like to get something set in stone beforehand so I can make plans. Any ideas how to do this? I'm just a dumb, ignorant Ensign  , so I'm not too well versed on order-writing/detailer stuff.

Also, feel free to make any comments on getting married right before flight school (good, bad, irrelevant).

Thanks.

It's bad because you're too young/inexperienced to know better, but irrelevant because you wont listen to reason ;)

Ah, the wisdom that can only come from age. You're probably right on both accounts. I'm thinking more along the lines of having to focus on training while having a new marriage to focus on. Is this a problem of split responsibilities, or is it a good thing to have a wife to come home to? OK, nevermind on that second part. I can already think of what responses that will get...

Anyway, my first part (how to do IFS in MN) is the real question here.

I know a lot of guys who got married right before flight training and did just fine...

I'm pretty sure you'll have to report to P-cola then submit your request for no cost TAD orders for IFS. I know back when I was in the A-pool (a few months ago) they let a few guys go somewhere else for IFS, but they quickly ended that program. You either do it where you currently are or down here in P-cola. My roommate recently graduated from AFIT and is doing IFS here, despite her attempts to do it in Dayton (granted she didn't try to do it anywhere else). Bottom line: you can always try, but I don't think they are letting people do that anymore.

Hey chris,

Yea, youll probably want to do IFS in pcola because your class up date will mostly depend on when you reported here (and how soon u complete all the other pre-api stuff). But when u finish that stuff, you could try doing OHARP (Officer Hometown Recruiting Area Program) where youll get to go back to MN and do officer recruiting. Its no-cost TAD and theyre very much allowing both pilots and FOs do it. Anyways, gimme a call if u want more info on it. Im waiting on my orders and ill be heading back to San Dog. Great way to save leave. Aight man, ttyl!
