Doesn't a third party have to give a shit too?

This isn't the first time in recent memory where they've crossed swords (or that the ROK drew blood.)

I give a RIP, and so should you. The South Korean patrol vessel fired some 50 rounds (likely Bofors 40mm) at the North Korean vessel & left it retreating north & on-fire. Too bad they didn't sink it. Apparently, some Chinese fishing boats were in the area and may have contributed to the confusion.

Both sides are wound pretty tight - no big surprise that things like this happen.

the NORKS don't like the Northern Limit Line one bit. The situation usually escalates during the crab fishing season when North Fishing boats, at times escorted by North gunboats "stray" across the NLL for better fishing. The ROKs don't take kindly to this. Crab season is about March through June, so no crabbing now. Must be an alternative reason. There are a number of cross NLL violations every year, but its a little rarer to have full out gun battles. Last good one was in 02, and another one late 90's.

The NORKs are pretty good at escalating situation when it suits them. Obama set to visit the area pretty soon. Also, the administration has agreed to send over a senior diplomat to restart negotiations. Sooo, my take is that Kim decided to ramp up the tensions a bit, show everyone that they are just as important as everything else (they've been a little overshadowed by Afghanistan, etc) and they need some attention.

Kinda like what your kids do, only they don't have nukes or more arty and AAA than anywhere else in the world.
