OK. At the risk of being ripped and told to "search", can someone please explain why the NROTC website states that males must be 66" tall to be commissioned in the USMC and OPNAVINST 3710.37A states that the minimum height for USMC Student pilot is 62"/USMC Student FO is 60"? OPNAVINST 3710.37A doesn't differentiate between male/female in regard to stature.

How tall does a male have to be to be commissioned in the USMC?

I searched for 2 hours through all the posts on this site and military.com also downloaded every anthrometric chart I can find on the net. My son is a HS junior, 62" tall and interested in NROTC/USMC Option.

Thanks and fire away...

from OPNAVINST 3710.37A:

USN Student Pilot 62.0"-77.0"
USMC Student Pilot 62.0"-77 .0"
USN Student NFO 60.0" -78.0"
USMC Student NFO 60.0" -78.0"

I'd go with the CNO's Instruction over NROTC's Instruction. I've seen lots of USMC officers that were shorter than 66".

Thanks EA6BFLYR. Got ya on the OPNAVINST 3710 requirements. Can I ask you though, if a male has to be 66" tall to get commisionedin the USMC, why does the OPNAVINST mention 62" for USMC stud pilot/ 60 for USMC stud FO?

Relax, it's most likely a typo.

The NAVY & MARINE CORPS does not want anyone shorter than 62" as a PILOT regardless of gender. I'm sure there is a good reason for it, but I don't know.

Where or What website is giving you the 66" requirement? The MARADMIN makes no mention of a height requirement.

I'm just going to take a wild guess and say that the reasoning is to ensure their pilots can actually reach the controls comfortably.
As a 61" person, purchasing a vehicle where I can push in the clutch without eating the steering wheel is a concern...finding a motorcycle (sport, not cruiser) that I didn't have to lower was even more difficult.
Let's not even discuss those toe brakes above rudder pedals. A pillow behind the back usually works, but still....

Right. I understand the NAVY/MC doesn't want people under 62" flying aircraft. To be honest, I'm not sure my son wants to fly. I'm talking about the requirements as listed on www.nrotc.navy.mil

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical and scholarship qualification processes are independent of each other, but students must receive favorable endorsement in both to receive NROTC scholarship Partial list of disqualifying medical diagnoses: o Vision not correctable to 20/20 o Substandard color vision (Does not apply for Marine Corps or Nurse Option) o History of asthma o Acute or chronic cardiac/pulmonary conditions o Chronic skin disorders such as: Psoriasis Atopic dermatitis Eczema oUnunited fractures or major joint surgery oSeizure disorders oSevere motion sickness susceptibility oAlcohol or drug abuse Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) schedules and reviews all physical examinations for service academies and NROTC candidates; candidates applying for more than one military academy or NROTC scholarship program require only one physical examination If DODMERB determines a disqualifying condition exists, some medical conditions may be waived after further review Applicants will be notified by DODMERB of any additional requirements for medical history consultations or diagnostic tests Surgical, laser, or mechanical procedures to correct defective visual acuity may be cause for disqualification; no waivers will be recommended Keratoconus or a history of treatment for this condition is absolutely disqualifying BRANCH HEIGHT WEIGHT COLOR VISION NAVY Men 62-78"
Women 60-78" Proportionate to Height Normal NAVY NURSE CORPS Men 62-78"
Women 60-78" Proportionate to

Now, that definitely becomes a concern at certain heights. But then why then is 60" acceptable in the Navy and not the Marine Corps. I don't imagine that USMC seats aren't as adjustable as Navy seats...

I appreciate the feedback guys. Thanks. Anyone know if there are NROTC regs? Something in writing that I can reference or that would clarify the info on the NROTC website?

Is it possible that the intent is to limit scholarships to those male applicants 66" and taller?

I'd call NETC and have them clarify the USMC height requirement since it's their website.

Got an email reply from someone at the NROTC website. Basically, she said, "the USMC height requirement is 66", call the Marines...".

So I did call and spoke to a Marine Officer who told me the height requirement is 58" for males per MCO P6100.12".

So I googled MCO P6100.12 and found out that in was canceled by MCO 6110.3 "Marine Corps Body Composition and Military Appearance Program" dated 8 AUG 08. That MCO does show a table that has 58" as the minimum height. I guess I'll print out that MCO and have it handy when we go to meet with the OSO at the local NROTC unit.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this.

Could you to respond to the NROTC website folks and let them in on the secret (i.e.: MCO P6110.3). Maybe then they will fix the website. Thanks, and nice find!

Well, I realize that your son will be going to college in a couple years, but depending on your genes, he still might grow taller by the time he applies to / starts college. So it might end up being a moot point.

Personally, I was 62" as a HS junior, 66" as a senior, and I ended up at 71". So, who knows...
