Does anyone know which designators do not require one to take the OAR? and if so, what are the other requirements (degree major, etc)? Thank you

The OAR is a specific score derived from your performance on the ATSB. In the Navy I'm pretty sure all officer hopefuls have to take the test, regardless of designator. Obviously, the aviation specific stuff only applies to aviation applicants. I think that you can actually skip those parts of the test if you're not going for a pilot/NFO spot.

Affirmative, every officer applicant has to take the OAR portion. The only things that change are the other scores depending on what your applying for, like you said aviation types have to take the pfar, fofar, and aqr parts as well. As for others (SWO,Supply, etc) I am not sure if you take anything other than the OAR. Ask your recruiter for a precise answer. HTH

You sure on that one? The info I have is straight from my OPO in seattle, everybody is wrong at some time though. I find it really interesting if it is true...

That's what I heard from my recruiter, and I also looked into Nuke and CEC myself, before finding out I can't go nuke for security reasons, and can't go CEC b/c my engineering degree isn't properly accredited.

I'm guessing the OAR of the ASTB is pretty much meaningless to them. They both do interviews, and according to the people I know who've been through them, the nuke interview is damn hard. Dunno anybody that did CEC, but those guys are required to have ABET accredited engineering degrees, so they'll probably have to have some solid academic skills.

Nope, they have their own selection process that involves other things (interviews, specific degrees, etc).

Picking a career field by trying to dodge the ASTB is a little retarded, IMO. Maybe (I hope) that is not what the original post is directed at.

I, too, was wondering if I will have to take the OAR or the entire ASTB.. I don't *mind* taking the entire ASTB, but I meant to call my recruiter today just because that is quite a bit of info. to study just to show up and be told that I don't need to take the other portions. I forgot to call today, though. I am thinking of going for supply... does that change anything?

According to the NOMI brief, only the first half (math/verbal/mech comprehension) counts toward your OAR. You could be unable to distinguish a jet from a propeller and still be able to ace the OAR.

I have heard that you can take only the first half, but I've also heard of people having to take the whole thing even if they just needed the OAR. It's up to your recruiter, I suppose.

OAR question

I'm getting ready to take the test and I am finding information showing a math/verbal combined section as opposed to a seperate math skills section and a reading comprehension section. I just want to make sure I'm studying the right thing for Navy OCS.
