OCC (OCS) Board what helps?

I am still a little ways out from going to a board (I have not even walked in the door of the OSO yet) as I am trying to make sure I am competitive for Selection PFT wise and giving myself time to catch up on my basic math skills (I have forgotten a lot of the Basics after not using them) and study for the ATSB.

**Little Back Ground or you can skip to my main question(s)***

A long time ago while in College (freshman/sophomore year) I started the Process for PLC but backed out because I was going to College Full Time and taking Law Enforcement Training as I had a job with the Local Police. I had no other choice but to take the current Job as my family was not in any position to help me financially. So I had to pay my way through school and eat.

I realized I couldn't do all three (Go to College, go to the Academy and put forth the effort needed for OCS) and needed to figure out what I wanted to do and didn't want to waste anymore time of my OSO etc.

Over the years I have been extremely distracted with my job as I excelled and was promoted very fast. Now I have recently decided, after something major that has happened in my life, that since I am out of College and only work 50-60 hours a week (which is great compared to when I was also doing college) I will make time to prepare myself to try for a childhood dream.

As OSO Offices can be a bit pressuring I am doing the following before contacting them:

1. Quit Smoking (1 1/2 months clean)
2. Working my butt off 4 -5 days a week on various exercises.

A. After 2 months I can now actually run/jog 3 miles. I am finishing somewhere about 26-27 minutes currently and working on shaving some time off.
B. I am at 9-10 Pull Ups and doing the Armstrong Pull Up Program
C. The crunches, no worries there

3. Studying for the ATSB. I am using this site like a crack addict for Gouge and I am going to go ahead and pick up those ARCO books I think too (can't hurt I guess).

4. I have printed everything the OSO will have me to fill out for a Packet and I am working on it ahead of time so I can walk in the door, introduce myself to whoever the OSO may be nowadays at my Areas Office with my Packet in hand completed minus what they have to do , Criminal Record Checks in hand, ready to take my ATSB and my PFT that same day if they are ready. Again I need to do this on my own schedule and I want to walk in ready before I have to have the OSO chasing me down due to my work schedule. I also don't want to draw too much attention to me from my job as I don't want them to know I am looking to change careers just yet until I get a little closer.

**My Main Questions**

Question 1:
I have been out of College for a few years now and I may struggle to find some of my old Professors. Is it still vital to have these or how many do you have to have etc?

Question 2:

In the position I hold with the Law Enforcement Agency I work for professional recommendations won't be a problem. I can have references ranging from Congressmen/Ambassadors who I have worked on Security Details for all the way to Mayors and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies (DEA/FBI/ATF/ICE) I have done numerous operations with.

Do you think something like this would help me stand out or do you think something like that could back fire in my face? I don't want it to look like I am showing off or do too much but I will be honest I do want to stand out.

If anyone here has served on a Selection Board would this make a difference you think?

I currently am a Captain with the Agency I am with (The youngest in the history of the Agency) and oversee a District to include our Special Tactics Team. I am also the coordinator for all our Training and I am the head certified Firearms Instructor.

So I wonder if this would hold any weight if any to show I have leadership experience? Is there going to be a point this may come in to play on my packet ?

I am sure the OSO would know this answer but again I am trying to do as much on my own before hand and would like to know what to have in hand before going.

I just don't want to come off "too strong" but I do want give what I can to help me get picked up.

Any advice here I greatly greatly appreciate.

PS: Also thank you to all who make this site possible. Out of all the similar sites, this has been my One Stop Shop.

Can't answer this for you because I am a PLC-er so I'm not sure how the OCC guys do it.

Obviously I have never been on a selection board but I really don't see how this could be considered negative. I've been told that Active Duty and/or Retired Marine Officers are the best possible references to have for the simple fact they know what they are looking at. If any of those people are former Marines, I'd go to them first.

Yes, this is definitely something to mention and make sure it sticks out on your resume- which the board will also see. Supposedly the fact that I have a respectable career with a large gov. contractor was a plus on my application.

I just don't want to come off "too strong" but I do want give what I can to help me get picked up.

Again, I'm not sure how any of this could be negative or come off too strong. No offense/disrespect to what you have done up to this point (because it does sound pretty impressive) but you still haven't proven you can be a Marine, and I'm pretty sure that's the mentality of the board.

Good luck with everything, as long as you put your package in with a high PFT I don't see how you can not get accepted. Also, for the ASTB go ahead and get the ARCO books, there are some questions that are really close to some on the ASTB.

The only person that can answer any of this accurately is your OSO. For our region I know OCC is competitive as hell and you don't stand a chance of being selected without a 300 PFT.
