OCS Family Question

I've searched threads high and low, but can't find an answer to this question... When you report to OCS, is your spouse covered under Tricare?? I've got a kid on the way and need to make sure those months as OCS will be covered and not be an out of pocket expense. Any insight would be a huge help. Thanks all.

Yes you are active duty the day you leave for OCS, you will have a briefing on tricare during your first week there.

Make sure she gets on TriCare PRIME. She automatically gets on TriCare Standard, but you need to ask about Prime. It's easy, but it's an extra form (what isn't in the Navy? :) ).
Good luck and have "fun" in OCS!

OK, another question, or maybe two....

I know you receive orders to Pensacola (API) right at the very tail end of OCS if you're an aviator, but at that time do you also get your follow on orders to either Whiting or Corpus if you have a family? Or is it move to FL for API and keep the fam on hold until you're done with the first six weeks?

Also, any good off-base neighborhoods that come recommended? Wife is looking for some family friendly areas.....

Yes, if you're married you'll get follow on orders to Whiting for Primary at the end of OCS so you can PCS your family out here. I would suggest looking somewhere halfway between NAS Pensacola and Whiting Field to live, you'll want to minimize your commute because the Navy will only pay to move you here once, you don't get a second PCS between API and Primary unless you get your Primary orders changed to Corpus or Vance after you're already down here.
