I am scheduled to attend PLC Jrs this summer, but I might need to get surgery for shin splints. The surgery sounds odd I know, but it might have to be done. How should I go about telling my OSO and could this be a possible disqualifier even if everything is fixed?

Just be up front with him. I am curious, why do you need surgury and what is the procedure? I have been having problems with shin splints too.

I have compartmental syndrome in my calfs. In other words my calfs are two big and expand while running. Consequently this puts strain on my shins. I'm not sure if this is what you have, but probably not. Most shin splints are caused simply because of the running. Does anyone happen to know if this would be a disqualifier? I'm just afraid that even if I get my shin problem fixed I will be disqualified.

One of my roommates in college had terrible problems with shin splints. She was a soccer player and had to run a bit. She had a surgery done and was running again in two weeks, no problems for her soccer career. Actually, she wasn't supposed to run on hard surfaces for a few months.

In high school track, I used to get shin splints too. For people with minor problems, they can often heal if you only run on soft surfaces like grass. Taking time to stretch well helps (both calves and shins). Also, a shin massage is easy and you can do it yourself. They definately help with the discomfort/pain, and there are a lot of trainers that swear massages also speed the healing.
