Well, I'm a little biased because while I was an aviator, my ground job for the second half of my squadron tour was spent working in maintenance. So I concur with what Goliath and LadyJay said about AMDO. You will work with and be in charge of the most motivated and dedicated enlisted sailors in the navy. I was mostly just telling you what
I would do.
If geographic placement is important to you, AMDO has opportunities almost anywhere there's a navy base, in the U.S., or anywhere around the globe. Once you select a platform as NFO (or pilot, for that matter), you're pretty limited as to where you can go.
NFO... When I applied for OCS I put NFO as my #2 choice and SWO as #3 but knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have put either one down. I'm sure a lot of guys like it, and if your goal is to be an officer regardless of designator, NFO beats the heck out of SWO. I had a lot of buddies from OCS go NFO, and from hanging around them I got this impression about thier training: take SNA flight school, remove all the fun stuff, and multiply the crappy stuff by five. All that to ride in the back of a jet or stare at a console in a P-3 where there's one little window the size of a dinner plate. Again, this is my two cents, not trying to start a flame-off with the NFO-types. NFO still gets you a commission, but I just think there are more appealing jobs in the navy (AMDO, crypto, CEC, SEAL, PAO, intel, METOC, HR, and of course, NA... all of which are available as OCS options, or at least were when I joined - maybe not HR). If you talk to an NFO you may or may not get a whole different perspective.
Intel's OK but you don't get to lead the troops like you do as an AMDO. Once more, all my opinion, for what it's worth...
Feel free to let me know if you have more questions. Good Luck!!
