Hey everyone. I just found out yesterday that I was Pro -Rec'ed SNA. First of all, I want to thank everyone on here that has been helpful in answering my many questions, you guys are awesome.

Also, I want to say that not many people thought I had a shot of getting picked up because I got my Business degree from the University of Phoenix, the NRD Department Head included. So, I am here to tell you that online degrees are ample, even for SNA (as long as the rest of your package is strong, ie prior enlisted and earned the degree on active duty.) So for anyone applying for OCS with an online degree, don't be discouraged by what people say in here or anywhere else, it can be done. I did it. Thanks again everyone.

Congrats Ken! I wanted to put my plug in for working towards a Masters degree while on active duty. It is not that hard, TA pays for it, you meet great people, and it puts you a step ahead of your peers. Most people won;t take initiative to get it done because they "just came off of sea duty." IT IS WORTH THE INVESTMENT IN TIME.

congrats! As a question to you both, how does the schedule thing workout? I was thinking about working toward my MBA online with AMU after flight school when on deployment, but if you have assignments due at certain dates and you're super busy, how do you do it? I did an online course in college that had no deadlines for assignments, only gave you a year to get it all done. If it worked that way, then that would be great.

I recommend Webster University (where I went) I actually attended classes but had to take one online. The Naval War College does online classes so don't worry, they are legit. Navy TA covers most of Webster U's tuition (for physical classes, about half for online classes). I have been on submission deadlines since January 2005 for both masters degrees and have made them no problem.
I would not recommend AMU as one of my buddies was doing a masters with them and he had a bad experience with a prof who assigned 16 books to read and then his "instruction" was to discuss what you read with the rest of the class.

Going along with the Online Masters, has anyone looked into or better yet completed the Norwich Universtiy online Masters Degree? They offer several, the main ones I am looking at are either Diplomacy or Military History.

I hadn't heard of Norwich's program. I'll have to look into that for a Masters program.

I was looking @ the distance MBA from St. Leo University. Anyone heard any good things or bad about that one?

Has anyone who was not prior military gotten picked up with a online degree? It makes perfect sense that someone who was prior enlisted would get a degree online, but would a guy off the street with the same degree have much luck? Just curious

As far as I know, and would put someones money on it, the U of Phoenix is an accredited school which is why you qualified. However, if you are going to some school endorsed by Sally Struthers (old commerical I used to see as a kid) then I would be more skeptical.

I actually had a buddy (another enlisted guy) who got his marketing degree through St. Leo University and always had nothing but good things to say about it. However, that was a bachelors program.

My recruiter told me that if some Joe gets an online degree straight out of high school with no real reason preventing him from going to a traditional college, it would be looked at as laziness, and I understand that. However, prior enlisted guys get the benefit of the doubt. Afterall, earning a degree while working 10 hour days in port and 16 hour days on deployemnt is no small task and takes a great deal of commitment and perseverance.

To answer your question, the University of Phoenix is really flexible for someone with a busy schedule. Though you do have dealines weekly, you never have to be online at any certain time. You have to: a) Meet weekly participation requirements, which means make substantial posts in the discussion room by posting your own ideas and replying to ideas from other students and the professor (usually at least 4 out of the 7 days of the week). b) You have to complete weekly discussion questions. c) Complete individual papers / assigmnets weekly. d) You are part of a team (usually 4 or 5 total) which works together throughout the course. There are usually 2 team papers / assignments per course and then one final team paper. Teams communicate through email, IM's, and by phone.

At first I didn't like the idea of team assignments because I don't like relying on others for a grade. But, once you get used to it, its not bad. Plus once you get into your 3rd and 4th year classes, and especially a masters program, most of the losers who slack off have been weeded out and you don't have to worry about them bringing your team down.

So, that is University of Phoenix online classes in a nut shell.

I was considering enrolling into the U of Phoenix when I was working full time, however they do have an entry age requirement (24 I think). It is a good program for those with a busy schedule.

Skim, they dropped the entry age down to 21, because that was the age I started my degree with them. It did use to be 24 though.
