Good Morning everyone,

Before I start, I'd like to introduce myself to everyone. I am currently active duty Navy. I am working on completing my B.S. in Political Science and will be done in December 2014. I have wanted to be a Naval Aviator as long as I can remember, I grew up across the street from NAS Pensacola. My grandfather was a P2 pilot during Vietnam but passed away in a crash on NAS because of a student. My step-dad was also Navy as a submariner and retired after 20 years as a Chief. I have decided to go the other route however and become an officer. I originally wanted to go to the academy but because of my poor grades in high school, there was no way I was going to get in. So at that point, I began college my sophomore year of high school and pursuing an AA in criminal justice. However, by my senior year I was still about 20 credits short of receiving my degree and that was due to my own fault of not doing what I was supposed to do in school and as a result, my GPA from that school is a 2.3. I enlisted in the Navy about 6 months after graduation and shipped off on April 1 2009. I did 2 and a half years active duty before taking advantage of the Early Career Transition Program that came out in 2011. I went reserves and at that point, I began going to school, majoring in Nursing. I completed a year of school before I requested to switch from reserve status to FTS. I had a 2.6 GPA from that school when I left. When I was approved for conversion to FTS, I got to my current command and immediately began pursuing my B.S. in Political Science and have not regretted the degree choice at all. My GPA is currently a 2.7 and as mentioned earlier will complete in December 2014.

Now that I have my introduction out of the way, I was told I should check this site out while I was working on my OCS package should I have any questions or be seeking any kind of advice. So, with that being said, I am all over the place when it comes to my package.

I have a 2.6 almost 2.7 GPA average for my package. I received the #3 of 17 EP recommendation in March, have 1 MP prior to that from this command. My previous evals before this command were #1 or #2 EP recommendations. I have 2 NAMs, 1 FLOC, 1 navy reserve good conduct and am about to get my 1st active duty good conduct in April. I am still waiting on my letters of recommendation but I know I have one from my former CO who is an O5, I will also be receiving one from a different CO who is now an O6, one from an E7 and possibly a couple from a few of my professors. I have not yet taken the ASTB but have been studying and intend on taking it in October. The other portion I am working on is my personal statement and the officer panel.

My question is, with the way my package is right now, would it be worthwhile for me to put it in for the January board, or should I pursue a masters to boost my GPA before putting in my package? I forgot to mention that I am 24 and have a couple years left before I would have to request a waiver but I am set to transfer in 13 months and would like to get a recommendation from the current CO and have at least one look from the board before I transfer. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and criticism is definitely recommended when suggesting what I should do in regards to my package.

I am no expert, and this is just my opinion, but you need to go ahead and take the ASTB. This way you can get your scores and know where you stand. Whether you have a 2.7 GPA, or a 4.0, if you do not have at least the minimum required ASTB scores then you have basically no chance. I have read post by other senior people here and it seems to be that you can make up for a low GPA by having high ASTB scores. Hopefully some others here chime in to give you some more advice, but that is my two cents. Good luck with the rest of your application.

I forgot to also mention that I have held collateral duties at my command that include MWR Vice-president and Secretary, Command Assessment Team, Command Training Team, Security Clerk, Legal Clerk and LPO.

Since you are on AD right now you must have your degree in hand before submitting your application.

You need to take the ASTB, your GPA is very low so you would need to score very high to make your application stand out, everything else is a moot point until you get that ASTB done to see where you stand.

First. Does your NC know your intentions? Second, a command CDB is in order so the chain can be made aware of your intentions. Third. Take the ASTB (Grab a GRE study guide). Fourth, schedule your commissioning physical and then if you qualify via 1 - 4.... Work with your NC to schedule your board/interviews (the hardest part in my opinion)

Don't sweat the low GPA. Break out interviews and a higher than average ASTB score can make you competitive.

Phrasing. ;) Just got to get it out of the way before someone else does. Kit is a much better way to refer to your application.

On a serious note, your entry is largely going to be determined by your ASTB scores, so I suggest studying the gouges on here and look through the ASTB help threads. Get a good grip of all the knowledge you'll need to know and then go take it. A good ASTB has a solid chance of overshadowing that GPA, especially with your prior-enlisted status. But don't stress. If you don't score what you want the first time, you can always wait 90 days and retake with a better understanding of what is on the test. Often times it shows your motivation towards pursuing a commission. I say give it a shot!

I appreciate the feedback by everyone and am taking notes as I move along in the process. I won't take the test until I know I am ready to take it. From what I can tell, anyone here that has taken the test so far, what did you guys think about it?
