Palm tree warning

This is probably obvious for any of you from Florida, but for those who aren't and are as prone to doing stupid things as I am, take this warning: don't climb palm trees. This is a stupid idea. You will quickly sober up as numerous splinters enter your hands, feet, and legs. While your buddies are having fun and playing on the beach, you will limp away to tend to your bleeding, splintered body. This will take a lot of time that could be better spent on anything other than digging into your swollen skin with a knife, needle and tweezers. I hope this will be of some use to someone out there. . .

Ha!!!... you just gotta know how to do it... (don't slide down the tree)

But good advice none-the-less... I've never climbed a palm tree w/o getting a couple of splinters...

Just a question... what made you climb the tree? I always did it for a couple of fresh coconuts.

I wanted to grab a volleyball that got stuck up there, but my pain and efforts went unrewarded.
So what is the right way to climb one?

I honestly can't remember... completely since it's been about 15 years since I've been up one. The most common way is to use a belt or something to support your weight and brace yourself with your feet... Tho me and my friends usually just kinda hugged the tree.

Throw other balls up there to knock down the volleyball, let them all get stuck, then wait for a good wind, or a hurricane.

Havent you seen that Jackie Chan movie where he climbs the palm tree??? He used a rope and made a figure-8 between his feet. He did it flawlessly. But yes, I will take your words of wisdom and refrain from climbing palm trees while intoxicated.

I thought no one would take my warning seriously, but apparently, these trees are even more perilous than I had imagined. The dark underbelly of a tropical paradise. . . the dreaded palm

Another tip for you young up and coming Ens/2ndLt's... When you're done with the whole "drunk skinny dipping" excursion at a party, don't climb the piling on the dock - ESPECIALLY if you can just walk up the shore to the beach. Those barnacles can do some nasty work on you, and you won't notice until the morning when you wonder who's blood is all over the floor. Not that I did it, but I've heard ;)
