You're entering a world of pain
When I was at my flight physical yesterday I ran into another Marine applicant. We got to talking and he told me about a program where the Marines pay for 40 hours of flight time. I can't remember what the program was called though. Has anyone heard about this?

Am I correct in that only SNAs get IFS before OCS? Or can NFOs also do IFS at a civilian flight school?

Not sure what happened to the NIFS or whatever they called it (NFO IFS). They were playing with it when I went through IFS. Basically you did a lot of instrument work and less VFR stuff. Lots of approaches.

If you've got your private already, then you cannot get IFS. You also go to IFS before TBS, not before OCS

No, if you have your PPL you can't do IFS. IFS will only pay for 25 hours. If you want your PPL, you're going to have to pay for it yourself. Marines will do IFS after TBS. Navy does it before classing up for API. As of NOW (and as we know things change) only SNAs are doing IFS. I talked to a SNFO last week and she's been trying to get an IFS slot and was told there MAY be some available in the new Fiscal Year.

I just got my orders in for IFS/TBS, leave in 3 weeks to Quantico where I'll be doing IFS then classing up for end of Nov TBS. Finally...a paycheck!!

IFS is a good deal. Good basics for what you will learn at API. Not any good in primary (but sir, that's how we did it in IFS). It will only suck if it will be a real snowy winter. Did it at Quantico Aero club in Jan-Mar 03 and we were constantly scrubbing ice off of wings, and occasionally shoveling snow off of the taxiway to get the planes out.
