Personal Stats and which board?

Hello,

I've been lurking around this site for awhile now, waiting till I have some statistics about my eligibility before commenting. I'm hoping to submit to the October boards this Friday, however I've been hearing a rumor about the boards being filled up (didn't know this was possible) and considering November.

Stats:
22 Year old Male, successful PRK surgery
7/7/7/61
PRT- 78 Situps 72 Pushups 10:08 1.5 mile.
3.1 GPA in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering
43.1 Hours of Flight Time
Applying as SNA only.

LOR's- My flight instructor, Lawyer/Football coach that I'm close, and the Officer in Charge of Engineering at the American Consulate in Frankfurt, Germany who I am close with.

I don't expect too much along the lines of whether I"m eligible or not, I know you guys hear that all the time, although I greatly respect the accomplishments of those who have been there and done that on this forum so any advice or information pertinent to where I stand would be appreciated.

Boards are now only reviewing 50 applications a month. So those that don't make one month get pushed back into the following month and those that don't make that get pushed back to the next month and so forth, so it could take a couple of months now before the board sees your application.

You have some pretty decent stats there. I would think you have a good shot at getting picked up for SNA.

This was a big deal in the August boards, because the August boards were the test for this new rule. Search "SNA's Beware" or something along those lines in the search function. My recruiter also confirmed this when my package was bumped for the August boards, so mentioned that it was either a 50 or 100 person cut off, he wasn't quite sure. Even so, if the normal board is 200 applicants, and they only take 100, then that means the next 100 will get pushed to the next month, and those 200 that applied that month will get pushed back to the next 2 months... so the longer you wait to submit, the longer it will take to hear back, potentially 3 or 4 months.

Now just think if I am wrong and it is 50, even scarier for those applying, though I have not seen an official Navy document on this policy... I also have never seen a Navy document on the selection boards in general, so sometimes no documentation doesn't mean it is not true or doesn't exist

Update: http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144510&highlight=SNA This is another thread about it.

That original 50 number ( as posted in the link that ash provided ) was TOTALLY fictional and used to make the same point that ash made in his post. Until we have a recruiter or valid source give us a number of accepted, lets keep the rumor mill at bay.

To the OP, you doing BDCP or direct? If bdcp, please for the love of God, don't apply to whatever board I'm going to be in. And check out the October board thread (we'll probably get merged with em anyway)

Re

Nugget61: I will be applying OCS direct. I have been working very hard up to this point... I'm sure a lot of people on this board can relate to the desire I have to join these ranks but it sure feels like I want it more than anyone. Regardless, I wish the best of luck to everyone applying in October. I'm used to competing against people I'll never hear from again. It's an entirely different thing when I'm competing against people with whom I wish to join ranks with.

This isn't going to help, but when my recruiter called and told me I was bumped to the October board, he told me I barely made it in and was the 37th applicant in the selection board. If you get bumped it isn't that bad, waiting does suck, but as long as you keep busy the time will fly by, it did for me at least.

I think that this only applies to SNA/SNFO applicants, I think that everyone applying for other communities are not effected by the ceiling. Though if you put SNA as one of your choices you will be considered and SNA applicant, even if you put 1. Supply 2. SWO 3. SNA... in their eyes you are still going for a pilot slot.

October

Well, it's official, all my paperwork was submitted today for the October 08 boards. I spoke with my recruiter about the whole application cap and he said it was a trial that they gave a try in August but he didn't' think they implemented it full time. He said normally they are scrambling at the end of the year to fill slots because they were more selective in the beginning of the year.

I've read a lot of talk about this but does anyone have any REAL data about this? It doesn't seem like a very good method. There must be some way of filtering those with great stats to the front or else the Navy is just going to miss out or postpone great potential pilots.

Regardless, my recruiter told me that I would find out if I was 'in' for the October boards around the 10th.

You'll find that the Navy is huge into changing how something is done and then changing it back a few years later. Just take a look at the Tailhook selection thing....;)

exo, I find that little bit of information pretty contradicting because from what I was told by my recruiter, normally at the beginning of every new fiscal year (starting in October) that they usually are NOT as selective as they are at the end of the year because there are so many slots to fill. He also said that the reason they are more selective towards the end of the year is because there are not as many slots to give out, so they can afford to be more picky on who they choose. I'm with you though about the Navy filtering those with great stats to the front. But then again, I'm just an SNA wannabe that has no place questioning the authority of those deciding my fate. Just gotta role with the punches I guess :icon_wink :banghead_ :icon_rage

I hope your package gets to the boards this next month! Good luck, and keep us all posted.

Gig 'em!

I'll keep you up to date. Where are you in the application process? I was told that I should find out whether I'll be reviewed in the October board or not around the 10OCT. I've been working like crazy to get to this point now I don't know what to do with myself while I wait...this will be the hardest part.

You can make it hard on yourself or easy on yourself... I suggest NOT counting down the days or starring at the clock. Instead try working out, go see a movie, do something to keep yourself busy. It will make this step easier, now waiting for final select letter is a different story... I can't help but count the days, it is killing me. The time will fly by if you keep busy, do a lot of PT.

Oh, keeping busy isn't the problem. I work full-time as an engineer and I'm close to finishing off my PPL. I've decided if I am selected, that I will take some time before my date and after I quit work in order to work out full time to get in shape. Has anyone done this? What do they recommend? I was thinking of taking a month. Any possible future SNA's here from the new england area? I've been thinking of flying up to some small grass airstrips to do some camping. I'd be willing to pick someone up if they're interested, once I have my license.
