I can't imagine that happening to me while driving a car, let alone an airplane! Truly impressive on all parts for pulling this off.

A friend of mine had a stroke that had an effect sort of like that. He was driving on I-5 in San Diego and had a sudden headache. He squinted for a second, and when he opened his eyes, he had quadrupel vision. It was pretty hard for him to drive, and he manged to get over to the right and off the road. By the time he had his truck shut off, his vision was totally gone.

Scary shit.

Amazing job by those brits. I can imagine that the comms were a nightmare. Just keeping the shiny side up would be hard enough. Going through an entire landing...wow.

This begs the question of what he was REALLY doing to go blind...

In 1977, a RAG student at VA-174 took a turkey buzzard through the windscreen while on a low-level in Florida, temporarily blinding him. He had the presence of mind to start a gentle climb, rocking his wings. He couldn't transmit but still had a good receiver so the instructor chase pilot talked him back to Cecil Field where an LSO talked him down to a successful arrested landing. He underwent eye surgery, was med down for several months, and was granted a waiver to fly again with contacts, which was very rare in those days.
