Post-OCS Temporary Duty?

After OCS, are there often times where the training pipeline is backed up and you get sent to your hometown temporarily for recruiting (or other) duties until your spot opens up?

I've looked a bit on the search, perhaps I didn't type the right words to find what I was looking for.

Search "OHARP" or "No-cost TAD"...that should get you headed in the right direction. Yes there will be times in the training pipeline where you have a month or maybe even more of just waiting in a pooled status. You may have the opportunity at some point to use one of these breaks to go home, either on leave or no-cost TAD orders. In any case, the footwork will more than likely be yours, as most commands will find something for you to do with your spare time otherwise. It is entirely dependant on the specific command though. For example I have heard the guys waiting for 5-6 months to class up in Kingsville aren't allowed to do TAD, while many of us in Meridian got to do it while we waited to class up. Same thing for other locations, and it is normally dependant on how many folks are waiting with you (ie how many watchstanders there are with you gone), what your student control officer wants to let people do, and how much time you have to wait of course. But overall, it is entirely possible that you could do something like this at some point.

Dude, go to PCola and get stashed at the aviation survival pool - great work hours, no khakis, and a really fun job. Also, when you go through API and do the helo dunker, you'll be an expert at it since you've had way more rides than anyone else in your class.

That being said, I might note that if you work with the divers who run the pool, then come back as a student, they will screw with you mercilessly. Good fun though.

I've heard (no names to be mentioned) that the power company used to hire meter checkers. It pays ~$15/hr and you don't have to start work until after muster...or so I was told

haha the only thing that worries me is water survival... I think getting a chance to improve in that would probably be useful if I want to do SNA . Swimming is NOT my strong point!

you usually have to get command approval to moonlight though.
