Pre-API leave

I have not even graduated from OCS yet, but have been thinking about the wait for API already. Is it considered inappropriate to request leave after OCS to enjoy the "free time" while in the pool? Some people have posted on AW with the inclination that enjoying this time to fullest extent should be done, since afterward it is go go go. I have a Marine friend who went to Europe after TBS; I am just curious what others think about this.

You shouldn't have a problem with taking leave while in A-pool. It is probably your best chance to do is since you do not have any collateral duties. Not only that, but as it is right now, you can even go into the hole (up to -10 days, I believe) for leave.

Samsonite... I was WAY off!!
What about doing a sort "TAD" somewhere? For example, my family lives overseas on one of our bases as teachers for the DoDDS system. I've been wondering about the chance of doing some kind of small duty, maybe even some kind of recruiting duty, overseas at their base while in A-pool. Of course, if that doesn't work and leave is an option then that's fine but have you guys heard of anything like that?

If that is an option, maybe you could do some small something RootinTootin near where you want to go on leave and then save that leave for later. Just a thought...

They got any friends at a base command that could give you a stash job???

If so, that shouldnt be a problem- you'll just have to pay your own way to get there.

Yeah, I don't think that would be a problem...they have friends all over the base, although it's a air force base (Misawa Air Base, Japan). However, they are friends with several people on the Navy side of the base so that should be good. Since I'm not at the API stage yet, what would be considered a "stash" job?

We need T-6 Avatars
You can take leave or get TAD...now they are letting guys go home for a couple weeks (think 6-8) to work in their hometown recruiting station (program acronym is OHARP). I have 2 friends on OHARP now and know of many more who did it.

Hey man,

You could definitely get TAD orders to your hometown if you plan on doing OHARP. I'm doing OHARP right now in San Diego. Its no-cost so youll have to pay for everything yourself (i.e. travel, housing, food, etc). I'm with my gf so everything is good 2 go. I'm not to sure about the overseas thing. But if a command at the base is willing to take responsibility for you, then that should be no problem. Youll route the request through flight managment. It should take about 1-2 wks to process. The initial TAD is 30 days and it can be extended depending on when u class up. Good luck and if you want, I have a template for the OHARP request form. Later!

I think the posts about TAD for recruiting are directed at Jameski, but I am aware of that. The NRD for my area said I could come back and work here. I was just curious if it is frowned upon to request leave during that time in the pool.

If your a FO....its actually encouraged. But yea, people take leave all the time. I had buddies that took a week off before they classed up. But of course, you need to have all the pre-api junk completed so youre ready to class up.

Hey RootinTootin,

Sorry man...not trying to take over your posting with different questions. I was just thinking maybe there was a similarity between our situations (kind of...) and I was thinking there might be a way for you to not have to take leave. Sounds like there is some good advice on here... I'm encouraged! :)

If you are college program, when you graduate you get the option to return to "old permanent duty station." Basically, whether you go or not, you get paid what it would take for you to return home and get your stuff. You get a certain number of "Travel" days based on where you live, and you can also get an additional 30 days of leave if you have it on the books. Your travel is great, you get $99 a day and $.15 a mile to go back to your old NRD.

I got 8 free days of leave to "travel" and was able to take 29 additional days. It took me a day to drive home and a day to drive back.
