preselection for pilot

I just got off the phone with a recruiter, and he told me that I don't qualify for preselection due to my GPA. Has anyone been preselected with a low GPA but really high ASTB scores? Is the Navy looking at the whole person concept or not?

They are probably talking about immediate select not pre selection. If you don’t hit the criteria for selection and require a non medical waiver than you don’t qualify and will have to go to board for selection.

Immediate selection would be for those the navy doesn’t need to look closely at the “whole person”, because the individual is above the threshold in all metrics. Apply through the regular process and I’m sure they will consider the whole person, compare it to the whole person of all other applicants, and make decisions based on the needs of the navy.

Okay, so let's say I don't require a non-medical waiver and pass the ASTB with immediate selection for pilot scores, which are AQR 7, PFAR 7, and FOFAR 7. The only thing missing is my GPA. Would that be a possibility or not? my GPA was a 2.888

I’m not sure what the PA says exactly but if your GPA or any of the qualifying criteria require a waiver then you will not be eligible for immediate selection, that means you would have to go through the standard board process.

Okay, are there other routes to becoming a pilot that do not lead directly to becoming a pilot, if that makes sense?

Yes that would be the standard board process. You use an officer recruiter to help you put together a package to submit to the board.

The immediate selection is strictly a go/no go, you could be 9/9/9 with a 2.99 GPA and would be a no go, your recruiter should know this.

The plus side is your ASTB is good and I would feel positive about your chances going to board. I say this as aviation really only cares about ASTB and to a lesser extent GPA, their are only a few designators that look at the so called whole person concept and aviation isn't one of them, even the ones that kind of do really put a lot of weight on GPA and degree, so really whole person concept isn't a thing for OCS.

A few thoughts on this:
1. From the start, either your recruiter and/or yourself could have verified the immediate select criteria (like GPA). It's in the program authorization. Being that it was the GPA, your recruiter could have said on the first day.
2. Check out the various aviation selection boards/threads on here - there are people who had to go through the regular board and were selected. Don't take it from me... see it yourself.
3. If something doesn't make sense to you, ask your recruiter for clarity. Don't ever end a conversation with unanswered questions and follow up if needed.
