Prior Service USAF Enlisted to USN Officer - PCS?

I'm AD enlisted AF aiming to submit for the next pilot board. I am curious to know what the PCS process would look like from my current AF base to OCS/A-school. My thoughts were that it'd be something like:
- TDY to OCS
- Graduate / Commission into the Navy
- Check-in & start our PCS to Pensacola
- Use travel days/leave to move my family and our belongings from my AF assignment to Pensacola

But I recently spoke with a prior AF member who crossed over, and he said his going to OCS was considered his PCS, and he had to take leave/move his family between his AF base and A school out of pocket with no travel days or per diem.

Is there any other prior service that can chime in on their transition? That other member's experience is completely unsat.

Your original assumption is correct. Orders to OCS do not entitle member to PCS travel. PCS will be authorized in follow-on orders.

My info is 2 years old, but you get like 3 or 4 travel days to report to Pensacola. You can’t schedule your family’s move until you get orders at commissioning. Unless you take leave, your family will PCS on their own. Per diem and PCS entitlements are unchanged, you will get them from Newport to Pensacola (and for travel to RI before OCS) and your family will get them from your current station to Pensacola. The scheduling for HHG will be a pain, as you can’t do that until OCS grad week, but the money will all be there.

I was one of the last to OHARP and it saved me from the headache you’d be faced with. You could always contact NASP student pool and tell them you’re taking leave beyond your report date and the reasons why. They won’t care, just communicate.

I too was in disbelief at the position they put AD prior enlisted in. But in the long run, while the program is 100% made for single, off the street accessions, it’s a good deal.

Unless things have changed since my time….a long time ago…your circumstances are just a bit different than others due to your service. Basically, the USAF owes you a PCS “out” move and you could consider moving your family somewhere closer to Newport. I’m not sure if that is worth the lift since you’ll be moving again on the Navy’s dime…but this time from Newport to P’Cola. IF the AF is saying your PCS is AF Base to Newport - then go ahead and move your family.
