Question about designation order

I put in my package for the board that met last week. When I turned in my package, I had NFO in the first slot, and SWO in the second. Due to my ASTB scores (59 6/5/5) someone had called me to ask if it would be alright to place SWO in the first slot because I wasn't competitive for NFO. I said that my goal was to become a naval officer, and that if that was the best way to do it, then so be it. Yesterday, I was told that I was Pro Rec'd for SWO and NFO. I let my OR know that I preferred being an NFO because I was an AT2 and that I wanted to stay within the aviation field. I was also told that they usually just give you what you listed first, and in my case, it would be SWO. My OR said he'd inquire further. Does anyone have any insight on what may happen?
In the end, I'm going to be a Naval Officer, I just wanted to get a better picture of my future.
Thanks!

Back when I was pro-rec (2010), I was told I could pick between SNA and NFO. You only get a final select for one but I am under the understanding that you can pick once you are pro-rec. I am not completely sure though because I picked my first choice.

I did get your PM but will answer here since it may help some others, the "only get first choice" doesn't apply for Pilot/NFO/SWO or I should say hasn't for years, here is what you need to do.

Write a letter saying that you would prefer to take the NFO pro rec, address the letter to the NFO and SWO program manager, sign it and give it to your OR or processor, make sure you keep a copy. If this isn't done quickly you will be getting a letter sending you to OCS as a SWO.

Thanks NavyOffRec,
I figured someone else might know or want to know in the future. I really appreciate the help!

Good lesson for "later in your Navy career" embedded here somewhere. Mostly, I guess, in the detailing process, but probably elsewhere as well. ALWAYS list "what you REALLY WANT" as your number one choice. Then what you want NEXT as #2...etc. Don't try to game the system by making someone else's job easier. You won't always get your first choice, but at least bid for it.

I wrote my letter and it has been forwarded to the necessary people. I haven't heard anything back, but I assume it's because of the holiday stand down. As soon as I find out the results, I'll let everyone know!

Sorry bring this thread back up. I am going through a similar thing right now and I am about to write my letter to ask to change Supply to my first choice. I was curious is there a specific format or specific things I should mention in the letter. Should it basically be a motivation statement geared toward supply and addressed to the appropriate people?

Have you already been selected for any designators?

I was pro reqd for SWO and Supply with SWO listed first. I now want to go Supply for various reasons. I got am email saying that if I want to change my preference to Supply then they have a spot for me in June. I have not received and final select for either yet. I am curious to what the content of the letter should be. Thank you for your response.

I am curious to what the content of the letter should be.
Assuming two things: (1) You really now prefer the SC path (not just the timing of the offer), and (2) You think the e-mail you received is truly accurate (can't imagine it's not…), then just tell 'em the facts:
- Reference the e-mail and its contents (date received, who was it from; what it said)
- Tell them that you strongly desire the June Class opportunity, that your primary goal is to become a Naval officer and for whatever reasons you might have, Supply Corps now best lines up with your goals and aspirations.

Short and fairly sweet. Just the facts. I don't think you ned to worry about burning bridges, if that's your concern. You're obviously a good person and a well-qualified candidate…always articulate what you want to do.

Thank you for responding. That sounds like a smart way to approach this letter. Just wanted to get some feedback because I am very excited about this opportunity and I do not want anything to mess it up. I will definitely keep it short and sweet and follow your advice thanks!
