I have been running with bad shoes and finally bought some new ones the other day, but I ended up starting to get shin splints. Does anybody know a good way to get rid of them? I am going to the first increment this summer and can't afford to let myself rest. Any info. would be appreciated

Switch to running on dirt for a few weeks, and also give your new kicks some time to break in. Oh and ice the **** out of them.

I used to have them ... unfortunately for you, the treatment for shin splints is rest. I'm not a doctor -- you may need to see one, but the recovery is always rest. Sometimes a person with rigid arches is more prone to shin splints than the average bear. The overall recurring theme that leads to shin splints --- "overuse" running injuries --- is excess training with an inadequate recovery period -- and crumby shoes.

Depending upon severity it is often necessary to completely stop running for a period of time. When running is resumed – and this is where many injured runners make a mistake – it must be significantly different from the routine that lead to the injury. Running surface, distance, grade(s), shoes, rest interval .... etc. The concept of relative rest employs lengthening the interval between training as well as decreasing the volume and intensity of training. You can also substitute cross-training activities (e.g., bicycling) for running to help increase the interval between running days.

(edit for smiles: --- sorry FLYMARINES -- (see below) -- no smiles and they rise up against me ... :) :) thanks for keeping me straight :p )

how about a elliptical machine or does that imply stress like running?
If it hurts bad, like when you walk, you MUST rest it and let it heal.
My OSO explained it to me as a tear, and if you run through it it'll aggravate. The remedy is RICE = Rest Ice Compression Elevation.

If/when it'l fairly minor, then get on the elliptical machine. It'll work your cardio and quads. It's not a perfect substitute for running (doesn't work my calves enough), but it's better than nothing. It takes the impact and rolling motion out of running, so it's much easier on the shins.
