Questions before enlisting

Saturday I'm going to go to MEPS and have a medical exam and enlist. I have a few questions though.

I have tried marajuana one time last year, but I didn't put that in my papers. It has had no affect on me at all whatsoever. Should I tell my recruiter the truth?

Also, for the 4th of July me and some friends went to the annual street fest that was held downtown. During one of the concerts, some guy started smoking weed nearby. We didn't realize this right away, so we all inhaled some of it. Will this show up on the drug test? Also, what should I tell my recruiter?

Thanks in advance, and I hope I can get through this so I have a shot at earning the title of Marine.

First, you should be completely and totally honest with your recruiter. The penalties for fradulent enlistment are stiff. I'm surprised you didn't tell him about the marijuana usage earlier, he may be pissed. I would call him so he can do the paperwork BEFORE you get to MEPS. You do it at MEPS and you'll have one pissed off recruiter... As for "contact" highs from the 4th of July party, I wouldn't worry about it. It was over a month ago, and THC generally remains in your system for around 30 days. Let your recruiter know about it though, better safe than sorry.

So what do you think will happen if I tell him? Will I still be able to enlist?

The reason why I didn't tell him is because it was so long ago, and it was only one time. Only one puff too, actually.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm one of the FEW Marines on active duty without a drug waiver. "Experimental use" is still waiverable, and is not a big deal. As long as it isn't hard drugs...

Sounds suspiciously like another "didn't inhale" story of recent fame. Phrog is right, you should come clean about your past use. If you're up front, it is usually not an issue. Also, popping positive from second hand smoke is a myth (usually just an excuse used by those who really smoked it themselves). I've been to the Navy drug lab here in San Diego and got the "tour." The detection thresholds are not going to pick up second hand exposure - period.

Well that is a relief.

And no, I've never taken any hard drugs.

Yea, gotta come clean. I sat on two ADSEP boards...both were fraudulent enlistments. Both guys had prior drug use.....although that was not part of the fraudlent part.

Yeah, I'm going to call my recruiter tomorrow after school. I just hope he doesn't get too mad.

The thing is, even if I don't tell him, he will probably never find out. Only a few of my friends know about it. But it's been nagging at me these past few days, so I gotta come clean.
