That icing mishap is still briefed today, both in the community as well as at ASO school (at least it was a couple of years ago). When I was a CAT I, I got a brief on it at the RAG, as well. As usual, there's way more to the story than what is detailed in the Pettibone article.
I remember reading Grampa Pettibone as a Mid in college and it seemed like something worthwhile. Then when I actually got into Naval Aviation, it seemed like it was just another way for the Safety Center to lay blame without much more substance (and usually not covering some critical details about a mishap), but they do it in a "folksy way," so they think it's okay.
