Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced today that the President has nominated Navy Rear Adm. Joseph D. Kernan for appointment to the rank of vice admiral and assignment as senior military assistant to the secretary of defense, Pentagon, Washington, DC. Kernan is currently serving as commander, Fourth Fleet/commander, U.S. Naval Forces, U.S. Southern Command, Mayport, Fla.
Rear Admiral Kernan follows Admirals Olson, Calland, Maguire, McRaven and Harward as only SEALs to be nominated for a third star, which has all occured post 9/11 reflecting increased importance of Naval Special Warfare in leadership roles outside the Navy (note: all three star billets for SEALs have been in Joint or other DoD/agency positions).
