Well, i'm a little confused so far as to what the actual minimum scores are, USMC, for air. I did a search but everyone's input was fairly inconcisstent. I was told that i passed for pilot with a 5/6/5, but i missed NFO by a point with a 5/5. I still am not too sure on how the scoring works. Any input would be great. Are these scores above the min required as i was told they were for pilot? Did i really miss NFO by a point? Anyway, im just a little on guard with the way my oso has been handling everything, sketchy none the less. He informed me that i was taking the test with only 2 days notice, and i was pissed when i saw him give another candidate a study guide at our PT on the wednesday following my exam because believe me, i never got one. Anyway, im a Freshy and it was my first time taking it, so i have two shots left. GPA is a 2.9 and PFT is a 284. Competitive enough with these scores? Appreciate the help.

The scores you received are actually three seperate scores. 5/6/5 means 5 on the AQR, 6 on the PFAR, and 5 on the FOFAR.

The PFAR is the Pilot aptitude rating, the FOFAR is the flight officer aptitude rating. So when you apply for pilot, the AQR and the PFAR count, whereas only the AQR and the FOFAR count when you apply for NFO. So you basically got a 5/6 for pilot, and a 5/5 for NFO. Assuming the minimum is 5/6 for each (and I don't know what they are off the top of my head either) then you did in fact miss NFO by a point and make pilot by 1.

If I recall correctly, USMC is pretty much pass/fail as far as the ASTB is concerned. Assuming you want a pilot contract and are physically qualified, you should be good to go as far as your test scores are concerned.

I got the exact same score and was selected as an SNA. This was a few years ago though. I've never heard of the pass/fail thing...but I guess it's possible.

Sounds good, my flight physical is scheduled for the 30th of this month, but i wear glasses. Im hoping to go to OCS 1st inc. this summer on a ground contract, then get the PRK and switch to air, that whole routine. All i can do now is hope that i would be a good candidate for PRK. Ill keep you guys updated.

Spin, those scores are good enough by the numbers but when compared to applicants the time, they may or may not stand up. You've still got two shots, and I recommend studying for a retake. Your PFT is great, but the gpa is probably below average (not an insult). Hit the books, study, and aim for a higher score next time. You can apply with the minimum, but be prepared to resubmit. Good luck-

Then again, if you're applying for PLC, you could be fine. Old man applicants like myself were burdened with a tougher standard.

Today my OSO advised me that he wanted me to retake the test around april 10th to qualify for an NFO slot for OCS this summer. He said that if i kept the score i had, and tried for a ground contract, that i might not get it because freshman ground spots are almost full. So I guess ill be retaking it in hopes of getting NFO for OCS, and then upgrading to pilot after the PRK.

Nice recovery. See, why can't all the new(er) guys around here get it that easily? :)

Anthony,

It's been said before, but I think it warrants repeating:

1. Do not go to OCS unless you know you would be happy as a "Mud Marine." A million and one things can happen between signing on the dotted line and earning your Wings. If you do not earn your Wings, the odds are very high that you will be reassigned.

2. Do not contract as an NFO unless you really want to be an NFO. There are no guarantees that you will be able to change your contract sometime in the future. Also (and you can feel free to call me crazy), if your heart is not into being an NFO, don't "take" an NFO contract away from some other candidate who may want to be an NFO.

Not trying to be negative; just trying to give you some friendly advice. Best of luck.

Kdog, point well taken. As far as taking an NFO slot, I would love that opportunity, I went into detail on that topic in another post regarding the NAS PCOLA NFO "field trip". But, i am a pilot and have always wanted to be, so i'm going to use up every resource I can to get there.
As far as the "lateral paper transfer":) goes, I thought (based on other posts) that the NFO to pilot switch was just that, paperwork. If there's more to it than that, fill me in! Im always up for more information even if its not good. Just trying to play the game as strategic as possible, appreciate your help.

1 point waiver?

Another quick Q, do you guys think it would be a good idea to try for the 1 point waiver, (5/5) for an NFO contract, and by the time my physical is complete ill be ready to test again if not picked up with the one point? Any thoughts?
